Despite the fact that the Ballistic Research Laboratory funded ENIAC, once the mathematicians at Los Alamos became aware of the computer, they became increasingly involved in the project. John von Neumann became aware of ENIAC after only one year into the three-year program. Neumann, along with J. Robert Oppenheimer and Edward teller, employed ENIAC to develop mathematical models for the hydrogen bomb. In fact, the first test problem simulated the process of nuclear detonation; a simulation of 12 hard spheres using a Monte Carlo algorithm.
