They have to have a quick reaction, and be able to adapt to high stressful emergency scenes ("EMTs and Paramedics."). When arriving to a scene, paramedics and EMTs are the ones who decide which individuals are the most critical and are in need of immediate attention. Paramedics and EMTs are trained in basic lifesaving care, this includes but does not limit the control of bleeding wounds, keeping the airway open and maintaining the open airway, splinting and making sure broken bones are stable, and administering any necessary drugs (Franks, Patricia E., Nona Kocher, and Susan Chapman).
