EMCC Mighty Lion Band Research Paper

Throughout my whole band career, I have had some problems. Several honestly. However, I have always powered through them. Problems all the way from fifth grade to my freshman year of college. I am ready for the bigger and better things in the band, but I know that we have to push through these small rough problems before we can get the better parts. Within the EMCC Mighty Lion Band, some problems that bother me the most are people's attitudes, discipline, and careless people.
People’s attitude can really get everyone upset or excited. We have more depressing practices than we have energetic practices because getting yelled at does not get everyone in a fantastic mood, and this is a huge problem. I signed up to have a good time while doing something I love. However, we usually get yelled at on how to improve something, but it just makes everyone get more lazy. All the people who do not care about improving the band, they really upset me because they hold me back because they stop me from letting me get what I need to get done. I have dreams of taking color guard so far in life, but I can see so much negativity now that once was invisible to me.

Rubbing Off in the 110 I’ve always been involved with marching band most of my time in school starting in 5th grade. I fell in love with it. I consider marching band an art form. The band marches in many different designs or a patterns on the field while playing music, and for the Marching 110, they perform a dance at the end. For the rubbings project, I wanted to celebrate my time here at Ohio University and give thanks to The Most Exciting Band In The Land.…

With these intense hours I was very quickly pushed to figure out how to manage my time in order to keep my grades up and also succeed in color guard. At the beginning of school my freshman year all the way through the midway point my senior year would end up being this busy. Some students would see this as overwhelming and a waste of time, and while it was overwhelming at times it challenged me in a way that I had not experienced before. Not only did the band program help me focus and get my grade where they needed to be by forcing me, in a way, to pay more attention and use my time wisely, but in a way it helped me figure out what I really want to do after school. As I grew in the color guard I was able to start help with teaching new work and help different individuals figure different skills out.…

My heart is beating quickly, my mouth is dry, and as I look at the familiar faces in front of me, their judging eyes make them seem like strangers. I struggle to get them to quiet down and we begin our hour long sectional, which I have to lead. It was the first day of my third year in marching band and at the end of last year, with the graduation of the previous section leader, I was granted his important position. Being a competitive person, I was extremely self conscience of how my section made me look. I hated being blamed for their errors and was exceedingly harsh towards them during sectionals.…

From the start of my four year commitment to football and marching band I saw leadership all around me. My first summer of football my freshman year the seniors were prime examples of leadership. They were right there to correct form on our lifts, blocks, and set the overall example of what it meant to be a Mead football player. Later that summer I threw in marching band camp to my agenda. The drum major, my sister, lead the band with kept the entire band in order, and worked with us until our sets were flawless.…

To be in a marching band, one has to almost become one with the band. The instrument played is not a single aspect, but a part of a much larger whole that must be comfortable and confident together. When I first joined the band, I was not one of the more comfortable and confident people that fit in with everyone else. Most all band members are loud and proud of who they are, compared to myself, who always hid behind others and hated being the center of attention. However, almost everyone has that moment when they realize that everybody else is just as self conscious, just as scared, and just as awkward as they are.…
