Research Design Setting The settings in which this data was collected were vocational rehabilitation centers in each state in the United States. Each year, service providers are required to enter data into a national database regarding individuals who have exited vocational rehabilitation programs under their care. The population studied was clearly defined as 126 youth participants, ages 5 to 18, who had been diagnosed with SED as defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR) diagnostic criteria (American Psychiatric Association, 2000) and were in state custody foster care or parental custody. The SED must also result in functional impairment that largely interferes or is limits the normative functioning and roles of the youths in relation to their family, school, community activities for one year or expected to impair the youth for one year. Additionally, at intake the youth were diagnosed by a DCFS clinical staff member, and required to complete the Child and Adolescent Functional Assessment Scale; a score of 40 or higher on the scale is required to required to meet the SED criteria. I chose the case study of Kimika Kanzia to complete my annual IEP requirement for EDUC-614. Kimika was a 9 year old girl with moderate intellectual disabilities, a seizure disorder and a gross motor impairment. Kimika had been receiving special education in the early childhood special education program since she was three years old due to her education deficits and gross motor impairment. At that time, she was found to have significant language, academic and motor delays. The case study reported that during preschool she made slow but steady progress and over the next few years she was moved to a classroom for students with “trainable mental retardation”.…
In addition to an evaluation of Jackson’s cognitive processing skills, an assessment of his social and emotional functioning was also collected to determine how these factors may be contributing to his overall functioning in school. The Behavior Assessment System for Children, Third Edition (BASC-3) teacher report (TRS) was administered to Jackson’s special education teacher Dominic Fontana. A clinically significant score (T=70 or higher) suggest a high level of maladjustment. Scores in the At-Risk ranger (T=60-90) may identify a significant problem that may not be severe enough to require formal treatment or may identify the potential of developing a problem that needs careful monitoring. After reading the Panacek & Duncan (2003) article, I felt sad. I never thought about the importance of friendships. The authors talked about how friendships are not random and how proximity and similarity play a large role. For those with EBD placed in self-contained classrooms, they are only exposed to other students with EBD and that student population is small. After learning about multitier instruction and how students have the ability to move up or down tiers, I was shocked to read that students with EBD usually do not return to general education classes, once placed into special education.…
To reflect appropriately upon the journal, this reflection has been structured into the different elements studied and cited within my discussion and reflective journal entries. These elements are an assessment, the biopsychosocial and therapeutic approaches, and work with families. Even though assessment is quoted in a range of literature, the nature of SEBD means that there is no standardised or definitive test. Behaviour rating scales and procedures for observing and evaluating behaviour are used within my setting, but SEBD is a broad set of needs, and, therefore, diagnostic assessments should always be viewed with caution. As Ellis and Todd (2009) identify, there may be little that pupils with SEBD have in common.…
