Genre can be defined as a category of literature, such as the young adult and the dystopian genres that will be explored in this essay. An excellent example of the dystopian and young adult genres is the novel Tomorrow When the War Began by John Marsden, first published in 1993. This essay will discuss how effectively this novel fits into the young adult and dystopian genre. It will consider the various features of both the genres and discuss them with references to the specific examples taken from the book.

A key occurrence of this is when two main characters Lee and Ellie are seen to be snuggling into each other. Ellie states that she is losing herself in Lee. Although Lee and Ellie are basically in a war zone, Ellie is in a state of day dreaming and fantasy. Ellie then starts reflecting on every member in the group and remembers that everyone is still a virgin except for Kevin “if we had the privacy that hot afternoon I think we would have simultaneously lost our virginity”. Ellie also displays that she is lost in her feelings when she says “if life is a struggle against emotion I was losing”. An example of this is when the soldiers invade Australia starting from the tiny town of Wirawee. They proceed to capture all the residents from the tiny town hostage in the showground. All this commotion in such a short time would have stuck terror and fear into all of the people of Wirawee. While this invasion is happening, the group is out camping at hell and hear a number of black jets scream past and flying abnormally low. This confuses them a little but it was late at night so they decide to go to sleep. The next day they decide to leave Hell and go back home because they are board of just sitting around eating. When they arrive at the Land Rover they are shocked to see about five or six fires burning all over the country side.
