In this presentation, I will be showing examples of how the message of this dystopic film has been communicated through representation of characters, camera angles, and plot.
Set against the backdrop of a totalitarian Britain, V for Vendetta follows the story of Evey Hammond, a young woman who is rescued from a life-threatening situation by a masked vigilante known as "V." There is no culture or personality, and the government forbids certain artwork and literature to make certain that ideology does not arise.
The second main characteristic is that the society is made to seem like a utopia. This illusion is upheld by strict regulations and the brainwashing of the public through media influence. The illusion of a utopia was not only created by England’s government, it was created equally by its people, who let themselves stand by and watch when it could have been stopped. The aspect of corporate control through the media in this film is communicated through the techniques, among others, of characters and camera angles. In V for Vendetta, propaganda and continuous acts of brainwashing are presented in trusted media outlets like the local news. This kind of corporate control allows the public to believe in the image of the utopian world that the media promotes, where the reality to the audience is a dystopia. Throughout the film we see examples of the media's influence and how the illusion of a perfect society is held in place when the media is controlled by the government and information available to the public is not always accurate. This is relevant to modern society because the media is widely trusted as a valid source of information, but the fact that the story can be manipulated to make the people hear whatever the authoritative power wants them to hear is one that is widely ignored. After reading the book, “1984” by George Orwell, and viewing the movie “V for Vendetta” there have been many connections made between the characters of these two pieces. Winston Smith from 1984 and Evey Hammond from V for Vendetta are two main characters that show many similarities and differences in these two literary pieces. Both characters don’t necessarily agree with the way that the society they live in is being run. Evey and Winston do not fancy the fact that society is being run by a certain party who controls every single persons’ movements, thoughts, and daily tasks. However, the way they react to this hatred for society varies between both of the characters.…

In the modern world, there are many different countries with different systems of government. In Aldous Huxley’s utopian world, there is only one country, the “World State,” and one government, led by Mustapha Mond and the world controllers. This government system works and runs as a well-oiled machine with very little disruptions, which contributes to its success as a government. For the people of this “World State,” their government and habitations are a utopia, as is evident through the complacency of the citizens. Therefore, Mustapha Mond and the world controllers are successful in their creation of a “World State” and paradise, through the mindset of the citizens and the operation of the government.…

In spite of changes and destructions on one’s emotional and physical state, there is always beauty in the wake of brutality. This is a key representation throughout “The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak and “V for Vendetta” directed by James McTeigue, in which both successfully emphasises the the concepts of rebellion towards a totalitarianism government and the power of words. ‘The Book Thief’ parallels with the contextual influences of the Nazi Party ruled by Adolf Hitler in the 1930s. Whereas ‘V for Vendetta’ draws a direct correlation from the horrendous acts in Iraq governed by Geroge Bush subsequent to the infamous attack of 9/11. During distratrous time, individuals who are amidst difficult situation, should realise that there is always…

Evey is introduced as a compliant citizen in the movie V for Vendetta, who is just as afraid as the rest of the residents of London of what the government can do. She blossoms, however, with the help of V, into an independent, government-defying woman who wants and is willing to do what it takes to change the ways of the corrupt government. Though Evey doesn’t like strict laws that her government enforces, she is very much afraid of the consequences that could be placed upon her if she is caught disobeying the law. When she was caught in the alley going to Mr. Detrich’s house, Evey failed to pay much attention to the men who stopped her until they revealed themselves as fingermen, at which point she begged for them to let her go saying, “Oh, God, no.…

Film is portrayed as the art of stimulating experiences that convey ideas, emotions and surrounding environments through the use of the mechanical and automatic recordings that reproduce reality; being both past and present. Bergson describes cinema as being directly related to the function of intellect (Deleuze, 1986:1-4). Many theorists have stressed the importance of film’s ability to represent reality and the truth that might have other wise been overlooked. This truth derives from film’s ability to produce images through its mechanical process of reproduction, which does not require human involvement in the initial recording process. This is the reason for much speculation of whether film can be considered ‘art’.…

The fascist Norsefire government in V for Vendetta maintained complete control over its denizens by preventing the people from speaking out or expressing any form of opinion. This dystopian society was ruled by a government who strived to uphold complete authoritarian control through its usage of various oppressive tools such as monitoring the conversations and actions of its denizens. A terrorist figure named V appeared to rise as a symbol of hope to eradicate this oppression by physically destroying the government and its corrupt members, but his actions were only fueled by vengeance against the government for the cruel experimental treatment they had conducted on him at the Larkhill resettlement camp. While it may seem that V is a hero because a byproduct of his anarchy led to the freedom for the people of England, he was actually a villain because the true and only motive of his radical actions was to seek revenge against those who had wronged him.…

Alan Moore’s graphic novel ‘V for Vendetta’ (1998) was written as a means to display the author’s concerns about the notions of dystopia, fascism and an ethnically nationalistic world. In creating such a society, the author explores themes of corruption and totalitarianism, provoking readers to question their own societal standards as well as more closely examine the basis of governing bodies. The main protagonist of the story, V uses violence and intimidation to rebel against political leaders and provoke revolutionary idea, rendering him a terrorist by definition. Whilst it is true that his political purpose is pure in nature and that the majority of V’s victims have committed serious crime, not all that he does is noble and heroic as his actions are not justifiable morally or legally.…
