Dyslexia is a neurological disorder affecting the hemisphere of the brain responsible for language (left). Language is the use of a system of codes to convey a message. With regards to the written form, dyslexia affects how the brain process letters and words. In other words, the brain is “jumbling them up”. This article emphasizes the fact that not only is there a dis-fluency in word recognition and coding, but there is a phonological impairment in phonemic length discrimination as well. Researchers examined the differences in reading accuracy, fluency, and spelling accuracy between three groups of children between the ages of one and 6 ½: one group is of children with dyslexia who possess a familial risk for the disorder while also suffering from reading disabilities and discrimination problems (RDDP), and another group of children with dyslexia with a familial risk along with reading disabilities but no discrimination problems (RDTD), and typically reading children …show more content…
Participants were divided into each respective group depending on their age, familial background with regards to dyslexia, and pre-reading abilities; the goal of this study was to determine the importance of phonemic length discrimination ability on the general reading and spelling skills that dyslexia inhibits. One of the most important aspects of this study was the phonemic length discrimination tasks, and using those results to asses reading ability. The task contained different types of segments in order to gain information about the perception of phonemic length, both written and oral. Emergent readers and second grade children from the above groups were compared on reading time. For example, the task consisted of 22 pairs; three related pseudo-word pairs (m9k, f9k) and 19 unrelated non-word pairs, with two, three, or four syllables.
