When his three brothers visited him, they observed the sweat dripping from his forehead with his teeth clenched in excruciating pain. One brother, Harold Donnelly, could not bear to see his oldest brother in this misery. As Matthew begged and pleaded for death, Harold made the heartbreaking decision of going through with his brother’s wishes. Entering the hospital room, Harold pulled out his.30 caliber pistol and shot Matthew in the head, killing him instantly. Harold Donnelly was then tried for murder (Andre, Velasquez). Is keeping someone with a terminal illness alive always the best option? Some consider this to be simply prolonging the death of the individual; on the other hand, others say that every life is valuable and letting people die willfully would jeopardize that belief. Terminally ill people, who are mentally capable, should be able to make their own choices on whether or not they want to continue with treatment plans. Medical aid in dying, formally known as “assisted suicide”, is a program made by physicians who are in favor of allowing dying people to stop medical treatment, resulting in the death of the patient. Though, it is still an intriguing idea. "Like the controversy over abortion, the euthanasia debate is conceptualized as a conflict between the sanctity of life and freedom of choice" (Lavi). Physician-assisted death has been argued to be unnatural and dangerous. Some say that death should not be a choice, since it happens naturally when the time comes. Besides religious reasons, the other main argument against it is what can be defined as murder. Controversies about the topic started in the early 1930’s and has had nothing new up until the late 1980’s. In the later half of the 80’s, there was a spark of hatred toward the movement once again due to a man named Jack Kevorkian, also known as “Dr. Death”. The. Kevorkian was not a very tasteful supporter of the physician-assisted dying movement as he had extremely unconventional means of practice. He was exceptionally passionate about what he did, which included harvesting organs from patients he had assisted in their death, then attempting to donate them to living patients. Kevorkian was eventually convicted of second-degree murder after he broadcast a patient’s death on a CBS television show. Non-supporters were not all influenced by this one man; however, this
