Dwarfism? No it’s not a dwarf from the movie The Hobbit. Dwarfism means that at full growth someone measures under 4’10”. People with dwarfism usually are born with normal intelligence. A fact that most people don’t believe is that someone who is born with dwarfism is more likely to be born to parents who are both of average height. There are more than 300 different conditions that cause a form of dwarfism. There are two main categories, proportionate, and disproportionate. Disproportionate is average-size torso and having shorter arms and legs. Can also be shortened trunk with longer limbs. Proportionate is characterized by having body parts that are in proportion but are shortened. Causes of proportionate dwarfism are usually metabolic and …show more content…
At each visit the pediatrician will take the measurements and plot them on a growth chart, if your baby is not meeting certain growth markers, then your doctor might order imaging studies. Imagining studies can either be a X-ray or a MRI. Ordering these images can give the doctor the ability to see abnormalities of the skull and skeleton, the ability to see delayed maturation of bones, growth hormones deficiency, and reveal abnormalities of the pituitary gland and hypothalamus, which both play a role in hormone function, and help in diagnosing which form of dwarfism. Genetic testing, hormone testing, and family history also play a role when diagnosing someone with dwarfism. Everyday in the life of a dwarf is like being a main attraction on a circus.
