Dubuque Courthouse is a building of multi-period bearing architecture. The building was constructed in, Beaux Arts Architecture- having detailed, large columns with intricate moldings and free-standing statuary. The Beaux Arts style is defined as a neo-classical architecture which includes Renaissance and Romanesque architecture. In this piece, the exterior of the building will be deliberated since is the Roman aspect is derived, as well bypass previous incarnations of the building, as it has been renovated several times over the decades. This structure, purpose was to withhold up to 80,000 people, be able to stage reconstructions of famous Roman battle victories (including naval battles), contain exotic animals, and wholly encourage Roman patriotism. Though the courthouse was not used for gut-wrenching gladiator battles with lions, the Dubuque courthouse has been a major necessity through the decades. The courthouse was the first building used for public meetings and the administration of justice, but during the week the structure was used as a school, later permanently becoming a hall of justice and also an instant holding place for criminals. Since the Colosseum is an amphitheater the light-source is always external, making the arches use more for structural and decoration then a light-source, as well multiple exit ways. The arches used on the Colosseum are called vaulted Roman arches. Made of concrete, these arches added strength to the building without adding excessive weight. The windows on the courthouse are not vaulted but, keystone. This arch function was to make voussoir, blocks; it presses firmly against the surface of neighboring blocks and conducts loads uniformly, in which central voussoir, keystone, withholds against the gravity.
