They receive these drugs from South American and then distribute them all over our country after illegally entering our country with them. However, when it comes to Marijuana and Methamphetamines Mexico is the number one foreign supplier to our country. Marijuana has earned drug trafficking organizations the most profit in recent years due to its low overhead costs and these organizations are completely controlled by traffickers. Although the Mexican government has put strict policies and even bans on chemicals associated with Methamphetamines, the drug cartels have proven to be resourceful in obtaining exactly what they need. As stated earlier Mexico is not known as being a cocaine producing country but according to the FBI 93% of the cocaine that leaves South America destined for the United States travels directly through Mexico and the Southwest Border. Former President Felipe Calderon made a direct impact on how the drug cartels operate. He implemented new port security procedures and new tracking suspicious aircraft procedures which severely disrupted the way in which the cartels operate. The cartels were forced to break up their large drug shipments and make many small deliveries through more vulnerable routes. This program identifies critical areas within the country and allocate more resources to these areas to help fight the war on drug trafficking. By allocating additional resources the overall objective is to reduce production as well as distribution throughout the United States. In order for this program to be successful it will take cooperation at all levels to include, federal, state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies to work closely together and promote information sharing between all agencies. By utilizing information sharing at all levels this will enhance law enforcement intelligence making all agencies more efficient in meeting their goals. Using this strategy will prove to be a tremendous asset especially to those agencies who are under manned and lack vital resources. By focusing on these high intensity areas will greatly reduce the amount of drug movement within these regions. Another key factor to point out is the areas these agencies are focusing in are often distribution areas for drugs.
