Abstract
Drought causes hydraulic failure in trees. Hydraulic failure is one of the main cause of mortality that trees succumb to. Tree die off due to drought conditions has been high in the last two decades. Hydraulic Failure goes hand and hand with two other concepts: carbon starvation and cavitation, which also cause tree mortality. These concepts occur when a tree is not able to transport enough water from the soil to support itself. Some species of trees are more susceptible to hydraulic failure. Either because of what their environment is like when a drought is not occurring or because of what features they have developed to have drought tolerance. Cavitation occurs when the xylem pressure drops, allowing bubbles of air to form inside of the xylem tube. An embolism is the blocking of a xylem tube by an air pocket. If a tree experiences cavitation it will eventually starve to death from lack of water. Cavitation and embolism are similar concepts. Both are the blocking of the xylem with air or water vapor that prevents the tree from drinking. Cavitation and embolism can occur is a single xylem tube or many at once (Trifilo, Barbera, Raimondo 2014). When the drought becomes severe, cavitation will occur in all the xylem tubes, eventually causing the tree to die from lack of water. It is a well-known idea that droughts will cause a large number of tree mortalities. All plants need some amount of water to survive and it is very clear that without water they cannot survive.
