Importance
The journal article, Driven to Distraction, should be of interest to everyone (especially anyone who drives) since the issues addressed are so relevant in today’s world. Nowadays everyone has a cell phone and they use it for everything. The increase of cell phone usage comes with an increase of people driving and being on their phone. It is now well known that there are many dangers that can come from texting and driving but this article looks at the risks of the cell phone conversation. This should be of interest to anyone who drives so they can see that even the phone conversation itself can lead to risks while driving.

This experiment had two dual-task conditions; the first was a shadowing dual-task where the participant had to repeat words that were read to them over a hand-held phone while performing the driving task. For the second task, participants did the same exact thing as the shadowing task but instead of repeating the words back, they had to come up with a new word that began with the last letter of the word that was just read by the experimenter. The task was performed on an easy and difficult course.
The task that consisted of the participant just repeating the word back to the experimenter did not differ from the single-task control condition. However, there was an increase in tracking error for the word-generation task on both the easy and difficult course (more on the difficult course). Since there was no real difference between the shadow task and single-task, it is concluded that peripheral processes (e.g. speaking and listening) are not major sources of interference with …show more content…
Nowadays, it is very rare if someone does not have a cell phone, let alone a smartphone. People use their cell phones for everything whether it is for sending a text message, replying to an email, or checking social media. There are several campaigns out there to speak of the dangers of texting and driving to spread the knowledge of how dangerous it can be. However, this study shows that there are also dangers of just talking on the phone so educating people about that could also be beneficial. To try and decrease car accidents, there have been many laws made that restrict people from driving and being on a handheld phone but still allow people to utilize any hands-free phones. After evaluating this study, there is still an issue with this law since the actual phone conversation can cause risks while driving. This study should be shown to all drivers so that they can realize that there is actually a risk by having a conversation on the phone and just because it is legal to use a “hands-free” phone, does not mean it is
