Dressember Style Challenges

Improved Essays
We are a three generation trio, participating in the month long Dressember style challenge to help restore freedom and dignity with the creative power of a single dress as our vehicle. This challenge is part of a global movement leveraging fashion to raise awareness and funds to support the International Justice Mission (IJM) and A21 efforts to end the oppressive exploitation of women and children.

It's Personal: Abuse knows no boundaries, neither is it a respecter of persons. Our family bears the scars of abuse once inflicted upon the lives of our loved ones and that is why we are passionate about making a difference towards justice in our world. We must advocate for and protect the inherent rights of all dependents in society - widows,

Femininity differs by person and culture; however, we believe one of the many universal manifestations celebrating the beauty of feminine dignity is a dress. Although, Dressember is about wearing dresses for an entire month, the cause is bigger than a dress; it's even bigger than femininity. It's about restoring freedom, hope and dignity through the stretching of our personal comfort zones by collaboratively experiencing this interpretation of femininity with fellow advocates.

The Challenge: We can already hear you saying...this is no challenge; you wear dresses all the time. True; however, to increase the Dressember style challenge, we have chosen to wear 1 DRESS for 31 DAYS. This intentional act will allow us to experience the smallest fraction of what it feels like to have no options. We know our voice and efforts matter, and that we can help change the world that millions of abused women and children wake up to every morning.

Our Goal: We aim to raise $200.00 by December 31st. Will you help us meet our goal and create real change? Every dollar counts and the process is fast, easy and secure. Dressember is recognized as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization by the IRS. Your generous donation made is fully tax deductible to the extent allowed by the U.S.

Another example is a short film I first saw in my play analysis class. A slightly unconventional example I think, yet, I feel it goes with the argument that has been built. Salvador Dali in 1929 released a film called Un Chein Andalou, and the particular scene that I saw in class was of a man dissecting the iris of a young woman’s eye. The scene brings forward the idea that female sight is not central. Furthermore, it also reinforces the fact that men are not just the audience but also seem to have the controlling hand in running the show; everything from the writing to the directing.…

In the articles, “In Defense of Liz Lemon” by Emily Nussbaum and “The Fashion Industry: Free to Be an Individual” by Hannah Berry, both discuss how women can choose to step out of the typical stereotype on how women should be portrayed and be who they truly want to be. For centuries, there has been an unspoken code on how women should act, dress, and behave. However, through the years women have started to step out of those roles to embrace who they are truly are. Considering that women are becoming more powerful and successful than ever before, one would have to agree that women no longer stand in the shadows of men in the workplace or at home. Women are now becoming more comfortable in who they are by showing their personality and confidence in the way they act, dress and communicate to others.…

I have decided to write this journal article on an article that I found online that speaks directly to experiences that I had throughout middle school and high school. The article is titled, “The Sexism of School Dress Codes”. A young girl named Maggie Sunseri noticed that the dress codes in her school were geared more directly to girls than it was to boys. At first, Maggie rightfully saw this concept to be unfair. The rationale that the administrators gave behind this idea, however, was even more upsetting to Maggie.…

Elizabeth L. Cline’s book Overdressed: The Shockingly High Cost of Cheap Fashion unravels the global garment industry, consumerism, and America’s reckless love for cheap and fast fashion. This book is relative to most humans on this earth since most of us wear clothes, and all have to acquire them somewhere. Elizabeth Cline begins with the confession that she too, had once been a naughty and thoughtless consumer. During the summer of 2009, Cline found herself at a Kmart and purchased seven pairs of identical looking canvas flats for $7. After very few uses, the shoes deteriorated and fell apart and were no longer in style.…

Presently, it is hard to find people who actually have an original and unique sense of style. For example, young girls will rarely ever show off their interests and hobbies. They would rather express attitude in the way they dress. I must admit that it is difficult to avoid the temptation of dressing like everybody else. Clothes that are meant to be childish and innocent have been transformed into a grown-up and sexy style.…

My AP Literature teacher, Mr. Mercer, once asked my class a serious question: why do women apologize so much? A thoughtful pause followed while the class, females especially, pondered the answer. My teacher elaborated with a short anecdote about a female student from a previous class: Mr. Mercer was standing in front of the doorway before class, speaking with another student. The female student approached the doorway so Mr. Mercer and the student courteously moved out of the way. The female student nodded and uttered a quick “sorry” as she hustled past them.…

The True Cost shows the story behind the cheap clothes we buy. It shows how inhumane we can be for a piece of fabric that won’t change our lives by making us smarter, more powerful, thinner, richer, but we want to have it so bad that we are willing to compromise people’s integrity, and put them in factories until they die from working, just for a piece of clothing that might make us think that we are “pretty” but won’t bring us the least bit of happiness. This is a story about clothing. It’s about the clothes we wear, the people who make them, and the impact the industry is having on our world.…

As a young female designer myself, I can really understand and empathize the struggles of a young women who tries to keep up with the constantly changing fashion trends. Following these fast paced trends encourages people to shop at brands that promote fast fashion. This creates a negative impact in society. Fast fashion stores copy high end styles and provide them for very cheap and affordable prices. Although they provide a quick and cheap option to women with low finances, the after effect is what causes the real damage.…
