Because students aren’t use to being away from home for the first time, they don’t know how to feel or what to do with themselves. Dr. Gorman also states, “New students may make comparisons between college and home” (1). Because students make a pro and con list between college and home, they forget to go look for the excitement, rather than just thinking about the excitements at home. Culture Shock has multiple cause, but I think the main reason for it is that students are not prepared for the life of college, and they don’t know how to deal with it. As the person I am. I was already used to being away from home, even though it is my first time, but the experience of being gone for a day or two, help me cope with being away from home. Also, I am use to having to deal with the responsibility of cleaning, cooking, and doing laundry. However, my culture shock of being in college was making friends. Being in a new environment with diverse people, was new to me. Also, not being able to see them same faces everyday makes it complicated for me to form relationships. So, moving onto campus where you have to start off fresh, was like trying to start a paper. I didn’t know where to begin or how to even make friends. But I learned the skill to this is getting involved on campus. Once you are involved on campus and are in different organizations, you will meet new people who have similar interest as you, and then the friendships will begin to blossom. One of Dr. Mancini advice on dealing with culture shock is “don’t give up your personal identity to fit in” (2). I didn’t choose this advice not only because it was a good idea, but because it is so important to me. Your identity is who you are, and not what others want you to be. If you change your identity for other people, then how do you expect to be true to yourself? Even if you’re not 100% sure about who you are, college helps guide you to know who you are and what
