It is said that you should live life to the fullest and stress free, but when you have so many obstacles to face it is hard to think positive and stay happy. Not everyones’ life is the same, some have it easy, some have it hard, but that does not mean you can’t achieve your life goals and change how you used to live before by making the right decisions. The same thing goes to Dr. Ben Carson, a man who lived in poverty and had rough times from his childhood up to his high school years; he grew up without a father, a mother who was not that well educated and worked job to job providing for her family, and racism. The same for my parents when they first came to America 25 years ago. When my father first came, he had no money and no place to sleep; …show more content…
They always put me in nice dresses and kept me looking well; around that time we were living in an apartment, very low maintenance and run down, the area was not good either but that is where our first store was. The store was bringing in money but only enough to run our everyday lives. Around four years old I started kindergarten and used to go in bus; we only had one car and my mother didn’t have a license then only my father did. It was not until four years later my parents bought a two story house when I was about eight years old. Dr. Carson had a very rough childhood; with growing up without a father and a mother who would go get help from a psychologist. Dr. Carson and his brother had to live with their mother sister in an apartment that was very filthy and unlivable, but him and his brother had not choice but to live over there until his mother was able to buy their house back. Dr. Carson school experience was not good either, would get constantly bullied for being dumb and failing all of his tests; but his mother was very supportive and told him that he can do it and made him memorize the multiplication tables and have a one page report written at the end of the week of a book he read and that really helped him get his grades

In hindsight, I realize that those life experiences have molded me into the caring, compassionate person that I am, just as Sanders’ life experiences have shaped him into the man, father, and writer he is today. Although Sanders learned different lessons from his experiences than I did, they were equally influential in his life. Sanders’ father was consumed with alcoholism and was unable to teach him normal life lessons a father would teach his son. Similarly, my friends did not necessarily provide me with a normal middle school experience, but thankfully both Sanders and I were able to learn and flourish from our challenging…

Seth Holmes does a wonderful job shining a light on the current problems that migrant agricultural workers have in the United States. His balance of personal experience with background research allows the audience to empathize with the migrant workers as well as understand some of the systematic problems. Our group seems to thoroughly enjoy reading this book and we have discussed a host of different topics brought up in the reading. The talking points which I have connected with were about the individual reasons why immigrants are coming to the United States and how they relate to the systematic problems. Holmes has given me new insight into the reason why many Hispanics are immigrating as well as disproving many of the myths.…

Should illegal immigrant’s offspring be entitled to all the privileges of an American citizen? Or should they be deprived of this blessing just because some people are too close minded? Birthright citizenship has always been an issue with many Americans. In his essay “An Argument to be made about Immigrant Babies and Citizenship,” George Will writes about a “simple reform that would drain some scalding steam from immigration arguments… thereby removing an incentive for illegal immigration.” While some are for it, a lot are against it and are trying to find a way to change the interpretation of the fourteenth amendment.…

Growing up I faced many obstacles coming from an immigrant family. Never did I think I could overcome the obstacles and say that the little girl who went to one of the worst rated elementary schools in the area was now a rising senior at George Mason University. I grew up with both my parents and three sisters, and in my eyes we were an average “normal” family. I never saw my parents struggle or felt like I was missing anything, and not until I was older did I understand our situation. I did not fully grasp that my parents were “different” because they were immigrants until I realized they could not help me with my homework, engage in a conversation with my teachers, nor participate in all the things my classmates parents did.…

In the past several decades, thousands of people have immigrated to America in search of a better life or a fresh start. They came from all corners of the Earth: different cultures, languages, and life experiences. Eighteen years ago, my family immigrated to America from Ukraine to escape religious persecution and economic instability. My parents wanted their children to have the opportunity to get a good education and succeed in life because they never had that chance. Back in the Ukraine they were looked down upon for their Christian faith; therefore, they weren’t able to attend college.…

At an early age, I didn’t understand the concept of an immigrant family and that our resources were very limited. It wasn’t until I got older, that I finally understood and recognized the struggle that my family went and still continues to go through. My realization began when I was about 11-years old and I noticed that my father not only worked for his own small gardening service, but that he also took my older brothers to work with him. I knew it was a time for serious measures because my brothers started helping my father when they were close to my age, and they continued throughout their whole school years. Everything was going normal in my family then, we rented a house that was in the name of my aunt, had enough money for the bills,…

Dan Gilbert, TED talk speaker, in the TED talk “The Surprising Science of Happiness” claims, we tend to overrate any horrible situation. In addition, he states that we have the capacity to synthesize happiness, or in other words, accept the things we cannot change by finding a way to be happy. Dan Gilbert documents his point extensively, and it is important to add that overcoming adversity can create a lasting satisfaction. Emily Smith states that “People who have a purpose in life rate their satisfaction with life higher, even when they were feeling bad, than those who did not have a clearly defined purpose.” Although others may disagree with much that Emily Smith says, some endorse her final conclusion that overcoming adversity can create a lasting satisfaction.…
