Setting
For my observation, I watched the video titled “Graduating Peter (2001)” on YouTube. Originally an HBO film, this documentary follows a young boy named Peter who is diagnosed with Down’s syndrome. The film follows him as he starts inclusion classes in the third grade and follows him until he graduates from high school.
Students Observed
In this video, Peter is being observed while he is starting the third grade in a general education class. Until this point, Peter had been in classrooms that only contained children with disabilities. Down’s syndrome, the most common genetic disorder, is caused by an abnormality of the 21st chromosome. It is often tripled instead of doubled giving the most common form of Down’s syndrome the name trisomy 21 (Hallahan, Kauffman, and Pullen, 2015, p. 91). There are many very distinct physical characteristics that are present in people who have Down’s syndrome. According to Hallahan, Kauffman, and Pullen (2015), each person with Down’s syndrome is unique in that not every person has the same characteristics. Some of the most common characteristics are a short stature, hyperflexibility of joints, and even certain heart defects. Down’s syndrome also comes with intellectual disabilities that are normally moderate. As the years have gone on, the degree of intellectual disabilities in these children are now milder mostly due to very extensive special education. Peter grew up in the 1990s so he was not in school when special education became more extensive to its students. He is short in stature and appears to have a smaller oral cavity as well. He does have intellectual disabilities and he had a difficult time with interacting with students. He would often take things from his classmates and refuse to give them back and he would get angry or run out of the classroom when he was not supposed to.
