Donna Gilbertson's On The Beach

In my Thursday seminar 2 class we were to focus on an artwork emphasizing certain elements of art such as shape, mass, and light. I took a like in a certain landscape piece entitled “On the Beach” by Donna Gilbertson made in Australia. This is an 18” x 14” landscape painting, but this certain work is not dated. It is said to be “painted in a loose impressionistic style.” Seeing that “On the Beach” shows children on a beach likely enjoying themselves. I would say that this painting is very representational, but lightly stylized. This painting has a very naturalistic feel to it from the green grass, to the golden sand, to the brown mountains, all the way to the focal blue waters emphasizing the light blue skies. Now from the focal light blue

They are too small beyond recognition, so viewers can just make out a figure. Some artworks that impressionists in the 19th century created share some commonalities with this painting. Impressionists depicted the nature with phenomenology excluding political, social, historical thought. They just focused on nature itself, so people are usually cropped or are represented by blurry silhouettes. The big difference from impressionism and the distinct feature of this painting is that what the artist wants to deliver is small philosophy, which is harmony between humanity and nature.…

The photo “Mermaids Hate Plastic” by Benjamin Von Wong features a vibrant color scheme. The extremely bright blue and green colors help to lead the viewer's eyes to the mermaid laying on the floor. On a first glance the clash of the blue and green against the neutral tan color create an elegant background for the mermaid laying on the floor. The mermaid is colored with a very bright orange and violet to draw the eye of the viewer to the mermaid. Bottles create a illusion of an ocean, but upon closer examination it is clear that they are not one body but many little bottles.…

The action takes place outside the city in front of a large boulder, and there is a church seen in the distance. The mood of the painting is very bleak and dull. The colors used are in earthly tones, and there is a strong overall contrast of dark and light. This dramatic lighting technique can be seen in the central figure. His outstretched arms form a V line.…

Although the shapes in the middle ground and background appear to be balanced, the colors are asymmetrical. The left side of the painting uses a lot of naturalistic colors with the brown building and the pale blue sky. The right side of the painting uses more contrasting colors. The sky, the demon, and the rocky plain are colored in using dark brown, dark red, dark blue, and black. This contrasts with the area below the demon, which is hell, that colored in with intense yellow and red.…

Description Nocturne: Blue and Gold Old Battersea Bridge is an oil on canvas painting by the talented nineteenth century artist, James Abbott McNeil Whistler. At first glance, one notices the simple yet elegant nature of this painting. The focus in this piece is put on the Thames River and the Battersea Bridge since they are at the forefront of the painting. This art work encompasses the beauty of the Thames River during night time, hence the use of the word "nocturne" in the naming of this piece. However, it is worth mentioning that this specific work can almost appear monochromatic due to the incorporation of multiple shades of blue used to illustrate the sky and river.…

For my creolization project I wanted to do images from back home so I decided to do a couple images that I had took when i was back at home in Hawaii. I will be going 3 images, for each image I will be talking about how I think it reflects an element or theme that Ivor Miller went over in his graffiti article and how it reflects to one of the Creative Spirit goals for class. What I got out of Miller’s article is that creolization is the concept of being able to bring two different aspects together and making it into one.…

The first Boat painting uses the visual elements to contrast the structure of the city with the uncertainty of the ocean. He does this by contrasting the visual elements. For example, the manmade items have straight lines and are colored in reds while the ocean is gagged and blue. This is more easily seen in the sky. The sky contrasts with the clouds rolling in.…

Everything from the outlines to the composition itself is drastically altered to create a more aesthetically pleasing painting. His use of bold colors, thick outlines, and “benday dots used in commercial printing imitate the character of cartoons,” (Stokstad 1095). The overall thickness of the lines makes the picture seem very flat and cartoon like, but the variance of the line weight does add some dimension. The use of these thick black outlines tells the viewer that this is not supposed to be realistic even though the painting is life size. Every single line is at a diagonal, which creates a sense of movement and direction.…
