As the years pass there are thousands of new graduates entering the workforce. How many of these graduates are truly ready? The essay, “Don’t You Think It’s Time to start Thinking?” by Northrop Frye is about the connection between the current use of language and thinking. In the essay Frye says, “A student often leaves high school today without any sense of language as a structure” (148). I agree with this and there appears to be a rising generation of inarticulate and illiterate individuals in that do not make our future appear extremely bright. Especially when I was approached by individuals that made me feel uncomfortable when having a one-on-one conversations with them. Although this started when I was a high school student, but continued into my young adulthood. I always felt as if these individuals were judging me and would think before speaking. Which there were times I didn’t know what certain words meant and wouldn’t know how to respond appropriately. Therefore I would agree and/or change the subject. In the essay when Frye says, “We are taught to read so that we can obey the traffic signs and to cipher so that we can make out our income tax, but development of verbal competency is very much left to the individual” (149). This particular sentence made me wish that I would have been more motivated as a student to ask for help when I didn’t understand something correctly and instead of allowing these individuals to make me feel uncomfortable. However I was like most students and wanted to get school over without asking many questions. Even though high schools and colleges have their seminars about educating on, “Why students should further their education”, but the speaker never elaborates on why having a strong language structure is crucial to our future and will overrule the educational …show more content…
When interviewing for a position at the Missouri University of Science and Technology I was asked during my interview, “Are you comfortable with your level of literacy and why?” At the time I was definitely not comfortable with my current level. However, this did not stop me from doing what we all do… say just what the employer wants to hear to nail the interview. This is a prime example of why we set ourselves up for failure and the educational system in our country doesn’t help the problem at all. When beginning my journey at Missouri University of Science and Technology I realized that I wanted to improve my educational background and become more assertive. I reached out on campus and was able to join a group that helped me become assertive and I am now able to stand up to those that try to belittle me or push me
