Common bottlenose dolphins produce a wide variety of underwater sounds (Lammers & Oswald, 2015) allowing the detection and discrimination of the position of a sound in three-dimensional space (Mooney et al., 2008). These animals are also known for their vocal learning capabilities, with high ability to imitate other animal’s whistles, including man-made whistles or artificial sounds (Lilly, 1965; Janik & Slater, 1997; Tyack, 1997; Janik, 2000; Miksis et al., 2002). This ability comes from the necessity of the dolphins to modify and adjust their own vocalizations, to be able communicate successfully with other animals of the same group (Janik & Slater, 2000), maintaining the social cohesion (Tyack, 2008).
