To initiate the topic that will be discussed in this experiment, I would like to let the reader know that this research was for a scientific purpose, and all altered behaviors did not impose any harm or risk to the dog’s life. This experiment will give a broad overview of the problems with dog’s urinating on the carpet. Recently, I came home from an outing, and found a nasty yellow stain on the carpet by the window in the living room. Needless to say on this specific day, the dog was outside at the time playing with his tennis ball in the dog run. After observing the stain on the carpet, I called the dog inside to greet me. This part of the experiment is considered an independent variable where the dog unknowingly displays whether he can differentiate between the full and empty bottle. Cherry (n.d.) defines independent variable as “the characteristic of a psychology experiment that is manipulated or changed.” On the fourth day, I decided to leave the empty bottle on the ledge which had no scent of vinegar in it, and when I returned home, there was a stain on the carpet again. So I decided to return the vinegar bottle to the ledge the fifth day. When I returned home once again, there was no sign of any urine on the carpet, which means that the conditioned stimulus of the vinegar smell made the difference. This is considered the dependent variable in this situation, because Cody responded in accordance with the perceived outcome. This response means that he noticed there was a change, which meant it was OK to urinate on the floor since the proper correction tool was not present on the windowsill. To quickly define dependent variables, Cherry (n.d.) states that “the dependent variable is the variable that is being measured in an experiment.” The outcome of this dependent variable created a measurable outcome for this experiment, which displayed the changes in responses according to the actions that took
