Dogs Should Be Allowed In Schools

Improved Essays
A topic often discussed with students at school is whether or not drug-sniffing dogs should be allowed to search through our school. Some arguments against allowing them is their invasion of privacy, disruption of class, and how they are ineffective. I personally believe the dogs should be allowed within the school and are great on helping the students and staff stay safe.
The first complaint I’ve heard about the dogs is how they are an invasion of privacy. For several reasons I disagree with this statement. As citizens of the United States we are required to attend some form of school. When we agree to going to a school, we must agree to not carry any illegal substances on the property. Also the school building is a state building and it

I too think that having a gun on school grounds is a serious crime. In the case of United Sates v. Lopez it should have only been up to the state to punish him, but that wasn't the case. Lopez's crime should not have been punishable under the Commerce Crime and that was exactly what the ruling upheld. The Commerce Crime had nothing to do with the Gun Free School Zone Act and therefore it was unconstitutional. Great discussion.…

Jardines illustrates the shifting landscape of Fourth Amendment analysis. In Jardines, the Supreme Court held that the use of a police drug-sniffing dog on the front porch of a house was an unlawful search because the property was protected by the Fourth Amendment. Jardines specified that only a limited scope of conduct is invited by the simple action of “hanging a knocker.” Actions that deviate meaningfully from this protocol (i.e., approaching the front door, knocking, and waiting briefly) or that are not “customary, usual, reasonable, respectful, ordinary, typical, [or] nonalarming” will exceed the scope of the implied license and thus violate the homeowner’s Fourth Amendment…

It also stated that within a school setting, student 's rights are limited in order to maintain a safe school environment. This decision held up the previous ruling of Horton v. Goose Creek Independent School District. The school tried to combat drug use within the school by bringing in drug-sniffing dogs to search the students, their lockers, and their cars. As a result, three students sued Goose Creek for violating their Fourth Amendment Right. The court ruled that it was acceptable for the school to use drug-sniffing dogs to search cars and lockers but that school officials cannot search individual students without having suspicion that the student is in possession of an inappropriate substance.…

This legislation addressing house bill 186 is of predominant interest to me because I am a student at the University of West Georgia and I believe that every student should feel secure while within his or her institution. This issue also directly impacts my fellow peers and professors as well as my mother, a grade school educator, and her students. From personal experience I have noticed the change in school systems where the building’s security has become more like a prison and less like an inviting community to learn because of the growth in school violence. House bill 186 clarifies the law regarding weapons in school safety zones consisting of any real property owned or leased by a school or postsecondary institution. This bill will amend provisions relating to carrying weapons within certain school safety zones and at school functions.…

even a search with the best intentions can appear to be a major breach of trust by teachers and administrators, causing a rift between the student body and the faculty. ”Strictly speaking that a bond of trust is shattered when locker searches are conducted. Although,in the article No warrant,No problem:Students’ Locker Searched at Random By Drug Dogs states “ The searches are performed at random, meaning that no single student is ever a target. ”In other words, no student is intended of violating school rules. For these reasons students make assumptions, although they are not…

Police should be allowed to conduct random searches of schools, malls and other public places using sniffer dogs because of the safety of the people. Many times illegal actions have occurred behind closed doors and no one has realized until matters have become severe. An example would be when people are crossing the border with illegal substances. If hidden well, airport security cannot suspect/find anything but sniffer dogs are able to. This also occurs in school, for students would not tell on each other for possessing drugs and there is only so much teachers can supervise.…

My answer to that question is yes, the search falls under public safety. Seeing as drug use is against all school rules and is a matter of public safety, drug testing is permitted under the fourth amendment. Participation in extracurricular activities is a privilege by meeting and maintain a minimum grade point average to play sports, as well as following the rules set by the school one being no drug usage. When taken to court The Supreme Court claimed that as long as there is reasonable grounds for suspecting that evidence will turn up during a search proving that the student has violated or is violating either the law or the rules of the school. Allowing for School officials searching a student who is under their authority without obtaining a warrant.…

Any dog owner and lover would agree that their pets are like family. Each animal with their own personality, responses, and temperament. Breed specific legislation, or breed banning is an ordinance passed by local government basically banning a specific breed or group of breeds of dogs that are considered dangerous. I strongly believe that banning specific dog breeds is not an effective way for keeping the public safe from dog bites or attacks. The ban does not notice differences in each dog 's temperament, or behavior displayed by individual dogs, but instead groups all dogs of specific breeds as dangerous.…

With their keen sense of smell, dogs are trained to be detection dogs or sniffer dogs. These dogs can help people, especially the police, to detect substances, for instance, explosives, illegal drugs, wildlife scat, currency, blood, or accelerants such as gasoline and lighter fluid (Clark, 2013). Also, dogs can be trained to become assistance dogs, which help people who have disabilities. For example, there are guide dogs for the blind and the visually impaired, hearing dogs for the deaf and hard of hearing, mobility assistance dog for people living with physical disabilities, or mental health assistance dogs for people with mental disorders (Becker, 2014). 2.…
