Start potty training as soon as you get your puppy. When you bring them home, take your puppy outside to the place you have chosen to be their toilet area. Wait while your puppy explores, do not interact with them as you want this area to be your puppies toilet area, not a play area. When taking a puppy outside I use the word "outside" in a happy, high pitched voice, repeating it as we go outside. Once outside I use "go wee wee" to indicate that I want them to urinate and defecate and not play. Having my puppy on a leash I can keep them focussed, giving a very gentle pull on the leash if they become distracted, repeating "go wee wee" in an encouraging voice. As soon as the puppy urinates or defecates I let them know they have done a great job telling them "good go wee wee" in a happy tone. Remember, it is important that you time your praise to be at the exact moment that they eliminate and never punish your puppy for making a mistake.
Accidents Happen
Puppies have small bladders and can't hold them long, only about an hour for each month of age. They need to go out every few hours during the day and once or twice during the night. Inevitably there will be accidents: use a pet enzymatic cleaner/odor neutralizer to clean the area. Your puppy has a much better sense of smell than you and household cleaners will leave behind a slight urine smell which your puppy will think indicates his toilet area.
