The story begins with Dr.Yuri Zhivago becoming an orphan after the death of his mother. At this point, her friends Alexander(Ralph Richardson) and Anna Gromeko(Siobhan McKenna) take him in so that he can be brought up in a secure environment in Moscow, where their own daughter Tonya(Geralinda Chaplin) lives. Another girl called Lara, aged only 17 is introduced to a friend of her mother Victor Komarovsky and starts an affair with him. Then, when the left-wing idealist Pasha Antipova(Tom Courenay) injuries himself during the demonstrations, Lara helps treat him and later on agrees to hide a gun that he coincidentally found. He arranges the necessary documents to send Yuri, Tonya and their son on a train that takes them to a town(Varykino) very far away from the dangerous and heavily politicised Moscow, where they will be much safer. Halfway through the train journey, Yuri, whilst waiting for the next one to come, errs into the forest and incidentally comes across a well-armoured vehicle. Yuri is brought in and interviewed with much scrutiny and suspicion by Strelnikov- a man he recognises to be Pasha. With a tense atmosphere in the room, Strelnikov decides that the physician poses no threats and dismisses him, but right before he leaves, informs him of Lara’s whereabouts: Yuriatin.
