We read graphic narratives by incorporating dialogue and structure. The structure helps the reader to understand the plot line and the dialogue helps to inform the reader about specific details based on what is occurring. A typical graphic narrative is what many people think of as a superhero type comic book, but some types of graphic narratives are not structured in that same way.
How is it possible to make sense of the images on the page? The words? The connections between words and images?
The images on the pages in graphic narratives are less open to interpretation by the reader because the images are chosen for a specific reason. This can be related to a movie because a director decides what to include and the message that they are going to convey through their choices. The words can make sense by understanding what is going on in the picture and then using the dialogue to interpret and add deeper meaning. The study of symbolic meaning, known as semiotics, has a specific structure in which the audience is able to derive meaning which relates highly to images. In this novel, I would look at the words on the page first and then go back to look at the pictures so I would have a better understanding about what was going on when I looked at the images. I tend to skip over the pictures because I am used to reading words and I tend to regard pictures as space fillers. In a graphic novel, it is harder to skip the pictures and still understand the full story because it is primarily being told through the images. I do not think Stitches was a very difficult read in terms of its order. I did not really have a problem following the images and storyline which other students presented during class. I thought David Small did a great job of illustrating the images in such a way that it was easy to identify what was supposed to come
