Do Copyright Laws Really Break The Law?

I believe that copyright laws aren't working well because before I did this project I did not know that I was breaking the law by using images on Google and using them for presentations and stuff. And I know almost everyone who I know didn't know that they were breaking the law when they were doing that.
Also there are a lot of people who download free music illegally. And then they download thousands of musics and then they get caught . Honestly I don't think that many people know that these laws are still in use today.
