The DNP student did not know what to fully expect in the beginning, but it was worth it at the end. The DNP student had the greatest opportunity to have Dr. Marie Etienne as her coach for this exceptional and intensive program. The DNP student was able to communicate with her coach via e-mail, face-to-face, and conference calls. The DNP student also had the opportunity to collaborate with some of her classmates who were participants in the program. Participants who were already healthcare providers were included as well. The DNP student was committed to meeting monthly deadlines, attending conferences, monthly webinars, writing reflections, and working on poster presentations. Existing and emerging nurses should be part of advocating for policy changes in the nursing profession. In the nursing profession, everyone has a voice. If nurses do not advocate for what they believe in, there will be other non-health professionals making decisions for us. The DNP student was able to find the Care Planning Act as the policy connection for this lack of advance care planning in the Florida’s Haitian population. This Care Planning Act (s.1549) allows grants to be utilized for public education on advance care planning. Public awareness needs to be increased in regard with advance care planning discussions. Advocating for this bill to be passed will allow more individuals to know how imperative it is to have an advance

Introduction Leadership skills are an important attribute of Advanced Practiced Registered Nurses (APRNs), especially Family Nurse Practitioners. In this role, FNPs may be providing guidance not only to their patients and families, but to co-workers as well. Raftery cites the importance of the nurse practitioner’s personal, clinical, and professional leadership skills in “the community, industry and government” (Raftery, 2015, p. 366). According to the Leadership Quiz developed by Kendra Cherry (2016), an individual is likely to have characteristics of one Lewin’s leadership styles (Cherry, 2016).…

I appreciated the clarity with which you approached this exploration of leadership roles for the DNP. Drawing from Chism, when you outline the steps to change and what the nurse can do and then acknowledge how political engagement is a natural fit for the DNP (p. 171). While it is easy to identify ways in which the DNP can lead through their work, I concur with your quote from the president of the ANA (2016) that the voice of nurses should be included at the decision making table. Moreover, I would take that a step further and suggest that nursing could be sitting at the head of the table. I addressed this in my original post when I identified the role of the Nurse Fellows Program through the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Fellow.…

These students describe a deeper understanding of leadership, community health, evidence based research, and advocacy for their patients and how it directly applies to them. In a small town in Idaho, a family nurse practitioner who wishes to remain anonymous, shared her insight on what core competencies are necessary in the role development of the APN. After working as, a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) in a clinic setting in Idaho for the past twenty years, she is now stepping into the role of a hospitalist rounding on inpatients in a small rural hospital with a total of 15 inpatient beds. “I am excited to start this new chapter of my life, I felt stagnate in the clinic setting, now I have the ability to touch the lives of my patients in a different way while continuing to advance the role of the NP in the hospital setting” (Anonymous, personal communication, September 12, 2016). She became a Certified Nurse Practitioner in 1980, after designing her own NP program at Brigham Young University in Provo, UT.…

Consequently, his words influenced me to pursue a DNP and not stop at a master's degree. Delivering leading care to my patients through the use of evidence-based treatments and using my insight to impact underserved populations here in the US and abroad, an advanced-practice nursing degree at the DNP level will allow me to move into a leadership role in nursing. With my new expertise, I will reform healthcare in underprivileged communities in the US and overseas by investigating answers to problems in these locations and by creating methods to put in place such solutions to produce better health outcomes for those in need. In the end, what I hope to gain from this program is creative destruction.…

Pavan, thank you for your thoughtful post. I appreciate your statements reflection on the DNP being a nurse leader who is well prepared to address system gaps by innovation (Grewal, 2017). Because the DNP degree is relatively new, health care administrator will be watching the DNP prepared nurses for effectiveness to determine if there is value to the role. It will take time a sustained effort for the DNP as a health care leader to close the gap between the old way of doing things and a new way of thinking (Peterson, 2017).…

One of the roles nurses may take on as they advance their education is that of the public health nurse (PHN) whom works at the county or state level striving towards infection management and prevention. The American Public Health Association, Public Health Nursing Section (APHA/PHNS) defines public health nursing as “the practice of promoting and protecting the health of populations using knowledge from nursing, social, and public health sciences” (2013). This role widens the scope of nursing to incorporate more “advocacy, policy development, and planning, which addresses issues of social justice” (APHA/PHNS, 2013). In a study of Irish PHN, it was found that their common roles included building relationships with individuals and communities;…

What I learn from this course is to understand and analyze health policy decisions and how they are formed and implemented within the healthcare sector. I believed implementing policy would be such simple by determining the dilemma within the society and ascertain potential solutions to direct the certain issues by developing a good structure of health policy. However, I did not deem that there is a variation of barriers to achieving policy, and one of the prominent barriers would be the political ideology. I did not acknowledge that political ideology represents a significant role impacting the health policy in either positive or negative outcome depending on what the government interest for the nation. Like Sylvia Nobel Tesh, once said,…

Since nurses have a significant influence on their patients ' care, it is important for them to participate and stay involved in healthcare reform to improve patient health outcomes. Patients should be given the correct information and necessary tools to make healthcare decisions; this is our role as a nurse. A nurse leader would see the issue as an opportunity to inspire a culture of leadership within the facility. Being a mentor is a being a leader. The mentorship will also help to develop cohesiveness among the team. The environment where this would be able to flourish is one where a leader uses a transformational leadership style where employees and leaders identify what needs to be changed and work together to implement those changes (Hayes et al., 2012). This is the approach that would best the author’s leadership style as well.…

Self-Assessment and Goal Progress Reflection Effective leaders conduct leadership self-assessments in order to progress towards goals (Grossman & Valiga, 2012). Whereas, in Unit 3, a self-assessment of knowledge and skills was completed with goals for improving competencies, Unit 10 requires one to look behind while also looking to what lies ahead for one’s own nursing career. This discussion will be a reflection of the degree the goals were achieved, the resource that helped achieve the goals, and in what ways the knowledge has been incorporated into practice. Communication and Relationship Management Looking behind while looking to what lies ahead, the goals set for the critical domain of communication and relationship management improved from 3.8 to 4.0.…

In this course, I learned more about health care policy in relation to the political as well as socio-economic contexts in which it emerges. In other words, I learned that the healthcare organization is not a singular, isolated, unchanging monolith of institution but rather, a constant work in progress; constantly molded and adjusted to befit local/state/federal law as much as the specific health- and financial- needs of the population that it sserves. A healthcare system basically needs to be designed to meet the needs of its target population and policy which neglects them is doomed to fail at serving that…
