Description of the content

This course will provide participants with techniques and skills to enhance their knowledge and skillset related to diversity training. Diversity is a topic that is very hard to discuss, and at times individuals are not willing to engage in conversations with others who may have a different culture or background than themselves. I would like to increase participants’ knowledge of cultural competence.
What (specifically) do you expect to benefit from redesigning this instruction (other than better-designed instruction)

The instruction for the participants will be organized in a sequential order which will become more complex as the training progress. The simplest form of providing a construct would be to define diversity and inclusion. To make this effective, we would look at a wide view of the two terms, but then we would look at a narrow view. We would allow the participants to gain a better understanding of the use of the terms. After this has been completed, we would be able to move forward to talk about diversity strategies.
As we begin the discussion on strategies, we would provide participants with the definitions of the terms again, and then move forward with the discussion on strategies. The important part about having the discussion on the strategies is because it could be a large range, but this would allow the participants to either look at their past knowledge or view the strategies that are being discussed, but then add their own as a part of the conversation. The key piece is to continue to allow the participants to reflect, examine, and summarize the information as they move

Participants will know step by step the flow of the information that they will learn. As we begin the discussion on diversity, we will start with definition of diversity and inclusion. There is a distinction between the two words, and participants will be provided the definition in the simplest form.
Strengths and weakness of using the theory or model for this content

One of the strengths of elaboration theory is that it allows the student to have a better long-term retention of the parts being taught. The students will gain an additional kind of knowledge, one that is usually more valuable than segmented information. The students will also enjoy learning more, and the students will have a higher motivation to learn the subject-matter content.
I believe a weakness of elaboration theory would be is that if content constructs are not done correctly in the beginning then your sequentially and summarizing may be hard for students to understand. The key would be to ensure that you keep the construct simple. It is okay also to be general, but you would have to be careful not to have to may structures and they may not be related and could cause problems with students

In the introduction to his book, The Trouble with Diversity: How We Learned to Love Identity and Ignore Inequality, Walter Benn Michaels introduces his views on why diversity has come to be more appreciated than in times past, as well as his main point and goals for his book. Michaels organizes his introduction with an approach that allows a reader to fully understand his goals for the book, but uses a style of writing that may prevent an audience without extensive knowledge of the subject to fully grasp the meaning of Michaels’ message on diversity. Michaels begins his introduction by discussing The Great Gatsby. In which, a penniless man, Jimmy Gatz, transforms into a rich man that is an epitome of the American values of the 1920’s but is still unable to win…

Diversity awareness plays a major role in successful interviewing. As an interviewer or interrogator, you should be able to fully understand other people’s perspectives so that you can better asses which interviewing methods or approaches to use. For example, if an interviewer is using the traditional interviewing approach, diversity awareness can possibly make it easier to understand the answers to the six guidelines to this approach (the five W’s and How). Diversity awareness can also help with effectively eliminating the prejudices or bias of the interviewer because he or she will be able to put aside their perspective while viewing things from the interviewee’s perspective because they are aware of their culture and ethnic background.
