Diversity in Psychology
The arena of psychology is a detailed discipline based on motivation, feelings, reason, and behavior. The field of psychology can divided into various subcomponents with many variations on specialties such as abnormal psychology, the study of deviant behavior, to fields that deal with psychology in the workplace such as industrial and organizational psychology that are concerned with applying psychological techniques and methods in the workplace. Psychology has comprehensive implications for human interaction, as well as, components from other disciplines and sciences. Such examples of the various disciplines include abnormal psychology and industrial and organizational psychology. Abnormal psychology is the study of abnormal behavior and psychopathology that emphasizes research and treatment of mental disorders (Hansell & Damour, 2008). Abnormal psychology has components in treatment and clinical psychology as well as neuro-science. Divisions in this area include the biological foundation of mental illness and the study of effective treatment options (Plante, 2011). Neuro-scientific examination studies the biological base of mental illness in addition to other physiological illness and seeks to comprehend the implied relationship between the body and the mind through which science gains a more all-inclusive perspective of causality (Deckers, 2010). Abnormal psychology examines deviant or abnormal behavior as well as in what way does biological psychology explore how evolution and genetics may influence behavior. However, the diversity of psychology also extends beyond the individual subcomponents and psychology’s key concepts. Plante (2011) stated that Industrial and Organizational Psychology is a field of psychology that merges concepts, techniques, and theories from many other disciplines. (p.4). Industrial and Organizational Psychology professionals work in various organizations and settings and accomplish their jobs by applying research techniques and methodology with the intent to improve quality of work life and productivity (Landrum & Davis, 2010). One area of expertise for professionals in the field of Industrial and Organizational Psychology is the idea of employee testing.
