When a student has a challenging problem to solve, what thinking strategy does the student prefer? Is he or she more likely to use a method they have previously learned to find the solution? Or is he or she more likely to find all possible methods to attain the desired solution? In most cases, the student would simply do the easiest method to find the solution, there being a variety of methods for the solution. This type of thinking can be identified as divergent thinking. It is a thought process used to generate creative ideas by exploring numerous outcomes. Rather than making evident strides and strolling along a straight line, one looks at different aspects of the situation, making distinctive results. Divergent thinking is essential for …show more content…
Each of the strategies she described allow students to “think outside the box.” Reversing the question/answer paradigm, simply means educators asking open ended questions where there are multiple answers to the question allowing students to explore and understand different methods of a task/solution. Goodman described “let the music play” as allowing there to be an open environment for students without the fear of being judged. Inquiry based feedback, Goodman’s third method, also incorporates open ended questions but allows educators to give feedback on the solution/response. Goodman states, “Students become less concerned by exact interpretation and more open to poetry, metaphor, and dream imagery in general (“Fuel Creativity in the Classroom With Divergent Thinking,” 2014)”.” Using art, such as collages, readymade, and pareidolia can open up divergent thinking for

“The big difference between the psychologist’s laboratory and the work place is that in the former the problems are isolated and in the latter they are embedded in the real-time flow of work with all its messiness and social complexity” (Rose 101). Problem solving in incoherent environments exhibits one’s ability to maintain their logical dominance in convoluted situations. This is a developmental skill trait that must be obtained through alteration and…

I refrain from making hasty decisions, a trait that’s made it easier to manage time and keep my life organized. It’s not that I don’t enjoy some spontaneity, just that I’ve had experience with faulty planning. I like to consider as many details and possible outcomes of a situation before making a decision; in fact, I believe it’s my best characteristic. Thinking things through allows me to make sound, satisfying choices in both my academic and social life. It is a practice that has saved me from careless mistakes on math tests and kept my activities.…

Transfer Effects on Familiar Thematic to Unfamiliar Thematic Problem solving can be a complex task especially if the person is unfamiliar with the content. People use problem solving every day and often relate to past experiences in order to help them solve a novice problem According to Glaser (1984) the psychology field is gaining a further understanding of the way people think and they don’t need above intelligence to be able to problem solve. However, at the very least they do need to understand what the topic is about (Glaser, 1984). In the education system, it is often popular for students to lack an insight understanding of what they are being taught (Perkins 1991). A study on insight in education found that by teachers using mental…

One of the ways I express my creative side is that I use unconventional ways to solve problems when conventional ways don't work. I would find a way to get the right answer by using unconventional methods because those methods seem to be more intuitive to me. For instance, during my sophomore year, I came up with a creative way to rearrange the variables to solve the logarithmic equations when the conventional way that was illustrated in the textbook and in class did not work for me. In addition, students are told to make connections between concepts and ideas in Science classes which can possibly complicate the learning process for me. I recalled in a Biology class, the teacher asked us to make flow charts, but I found flow charts were more…

The commonly held idea that some people are “right-brained” and others are “left-brained” is in my opinion, a myth. I think this because people do not utilize one side of their brain more frequently than the other. It is commonly believed by many people that those who are “right-brained” tend to be more creative, artistic, and emotional, while people who are “left-brained” tend to be more logical, analytical, and excel in mathematics. I have heard this idea throughout my education many times and my reaction to this idea is that it seems to be a very simplistic way of thinking. Additionally, it tends to reflect more on a person’s personality, rather than which side of the brain they use more.…

There has been a lot of finger pointing on why our education system is insufficient within the United States. Paulo Freire and John Henry Newman both theorized different styles of education. Freire, a Brazilian educator in the 1960’s came from a politically oppressed country posits, “education-as-praxis” or “problem posing education” which allows a cooperative and communicative relationship between the teacher and student (65). John Henry Newman, a converted Catholic back in 1800s conceived, “useless or liberal education” as seeking knowledge for own pursuit (53). In a modern education setting, Paulo Freire's education-as-praxis theory would work best; it allows cognitive skills, communication, and humanization.…

Education would not exist without teachers, nor would students gain knowledge without effective teachers. But what makes a good teacher? A good teacher is someone who motivates their students to do the best they can, and to be independent thinkers. A student who is an independent thinker not only acknowledges the teachers lessons, but finds additional information outside of class. Independent thinkers are defined as people who change the way they think, and question authorities.…

Morphological analysis was devised by a Swedish astrophysicist, Fritz Zwicky, who devised a structured method for investigating into many possible relationships of complex problems. It combines many methods which may have similar structures to breakdown a system , process or product into essential sub-parts, each part representing a dimension in a multi-dimensional matrix. Morphological analysis brings together two components such as dimensions and options of dimensions. These dimensions and options are placed in various combinations to assess the possibilities. These combinations are then repeatedly combined to generate ideas leading to a creative solution.…
