Distance Determination Essay

During the course of my 19 years as a police officer, I have had to testify as an expert in court regarding certain evidence involving shooting incidents. I am also certified as a range master for my police department where a large part of my responsibilities consist of understanding how various types of firearms work, the types of ammunition they use, and the mechanics of how the two work together in regards to the impact area they are targeting. One of the things I have yet to deal with in court is distance determination. What is distance determination? Describe two situations in which distance determination can establish the facts of a shooting incident. Let’s start by defining what distance determination is.
Distance determination is a procedure used to discover the distance between a firearm and a specific target. This is generally determined by the disbursement of gun powder patterns or the shot pattern. Ammunition used today is projected towards a target by expanding gas that is produced by the ignition of gun powder in a bullet. When a gun is fired, smoke, as well as fragments of the gunpowder, both burned

Handguns and rifles as well as shotguns each display different powder-residue patterns on clothing and the victim’s skin. When handguns or rifles are used, a white cloth or fabric similar to the clothing the victim was wearing is used as a test target. Because the results will vary significantly between different weapons and ammunition, the actual weapon and ammunition used in the shooting would be used in the test. If this is not possible, the same type of weapon and ammunition may be used which restricts the examiner to looking for similar characteristics in the pattern. The same type of testing is conducted with shotguns however, in the absence of a weapon, the spread of the discharged shot is measured to assist in determining the distance. Let’s

In order for Oswald to have assassinated JFK with a “6.5 mm Carcano model 91/38 carbine,”1. rifle, he would have first had to have fired the aforementioned rifle on the day of the assassination; Lee Harvey Oswald’s paraffin test showed no such evidence of him having fired a gun that day. At the time of Oswald’s questioning, W. E. Barnes of the Dallas Police Department subjected him to a paraffin test, where warm paraffin wax was applied to Oswald’s hands and right cheek and was allowed to cool as it extracted contaminants from his pores. If Oswald had been the shooter, traces of barium and antimony within his pores would have been present, however, while Oswald’s hands show high quantities of their traces, his cheek did not show any condemning…

Deaner went on to say that on top of the type of weapon you’re trying to get shooting accurately, that we have to consider what the intended use of the weapon will be. Wendell stated that “Along with the action type the next question should be what is this rifle intended to do? A heavy-barreled varmint rig with a powerful scope should generally shoot anywhere from an inch down. A big-bore double intended to shoot elephants at close range is a viable rifle if both barrels will overlap at 4, 5, or even 6”. Elephants and Cape Buffalo have a huge kill zone compared to a Prairie Dog and are shot at much closer range.…

The invention or the rifle let the soldier carry more than one bullet in there gun at a time. It had a range of 1,000 yards and didn’t need reloaded after every shot. The rifle had a drawback though most bullets where to big in diameter to fit in the rifles barrels or the rifle. But this changed after the invention of the Minie Balls. These were bullets with semicircle for the tip of it and a cylinder base.…

Two factors primarily contribute to a cartridge’s long-range ability: ballistic coefficient, which is the projectile's ability to resist being tossed around by the wind, and velocity, the actual speed of the bullet. The .22lr has a ballistic coefficient of around .14 and a velocity of 1,260 fps, which makes it very susceptible to wind drift and the force of gravity. At this rate, a .22lr bullet will drop about 38 feet between the muzzle and a target 500 yards away. Additionally, a 10mph wind will cause the bullet to drift about 94 inches, making it very difficult to hit anything at any great distances. The .30/06 has a ballistic coefficient of .447 and a velocity of 2,800 fps.…

The bullet path clearly shows that it was a long range shot to the side, because if it was a short range shot, the inside of the wound would have expanded more, due to the close proximity. With a long range shot, the swelling inside of the bullet hole is lesser, but still powerful enough to kill him. The shot has been proven to be shot from 600 feet away, which eliminates anyone shooting within anything closer than that proximity, (Roy Brown and another rumoured shooter, Robert Buie). There was no doubt about the distance the shot was fired at, because of multiple tests that prove. that if the shot was fired any closer or farther away, there would have been a completely different result in the bullets overall impact.…

She discusses in depth the processes used when testing these weapons on cadavers (and ballistics) and how ethics creates a barrier in further research with cadavers. Starting with the history dating back to 1892, Roach relates the story of Captain Louis Le Garde of the U.S. Army Medical Corps, who in 1893, was ordered to use cadavers to test two rifles: the new 30 caliber Springfield and the standard issue 45 caliber. She tells that after an experiment of shooting cadavers to test the physiological effect of different guns on the human body and how Garde influenced a movement on ballistics work on cadavers for a more humanitarian approach on gun battle. He proposed that stopping someone opposed to killing them was a better option, otherwise known as incapacitation. Another main point brought up in this chapter is the psychological theory- the idea that people who know they have been shot act more accordingly, falling the ground quickly while animals and some Native Americans can continue in battle long after being shot.…

The old-style bullet were lead balls. At close ranges the lead ball was very dangerous due to their large size, weight, and density. At long ranges on the other side the lead ball was almost ineffective. If the bullet even managed to hit its target due to its large size and weight the bullet would not have enough force to even break the skin. At long ranges the lead ball would simply bounce of its target leaving only a bruise.…

The idea of the weapon was that once it made contact, the bullet would flatten out. This would cause bones to break easier. On the edges, there were spiral grooves that went around the bullet, in turn; the barrel of the gun had grooves on it’s inside to make the bullet spin. This made the bullet faster, but more difficult to load. Having gunpowder residue collect inside the barrel made it harder to load the more it was used.…

Instead of the regular smoothbore muskets, the Springfield 1861 was invented using the new minie ball. These bullets were shaped like a cone with a hollow inside, and on the outside were three grooves packed with grease. The groves would give it a spin while coming out of the barrel which made it more accurate. When the bullet hit, “It didn't just clip the bone the way the modern steel-jacketed bullet does; you didn't have any bone left up there.” (Foote)…

The outcomes of a majority of crime scene investigations, which result in the prosecution of a suspect, is dependent upon the tenacity and admissibility of evidence. At trial, the evidence presented can be anything can be evidence that provides direct proof in support of a claim or belief of an assertion to prove or disprove any facts in speculation at trial or controversy, thus confronting flaws with proof or other means to form a conclusion or judgment. Simply put, anything that might have the slightest bearing on the outcome of a case can be broadly classified as evidence, provided it has a logical tendency to relate to the outcome of the case, therefore, in a criminal case, if the matter has a bearing on the guilt or innocence of the defendant,…

One well-known case is Smith vs. Massachutes, February 22, 2005. In this case, Melvin T Smith was on trial for illegal possession of a firearm. Smith was ruled not guilty because the state failed to show evidence of the guns in question’s actual length. The state later pointed to the Supreme Court’s ruling that if the gun was a pistol or a revolver it could be admitted as evidence to allow a firearm charge to go to jury.…
