“Inside Out” And the Theme of Mental Illness

Everyone loves Disney-Pixar's smash hit, "Inside Out." Small animated emotions living inside our heads, how cool is that? It benefits children, adults and everyone in between to watch this film. It offers so much more than an escape from boredom for an hour and 40 minutes. "Inside Out" has a much deeper meaning, and yes, it is even deeper than its most apparent lesson of the importance of opening up. Riley, the main character, is an 11-year-old girl who grew up in a loving and warming environment in Minnesota with her parents and hockey team. However, when her dad lands a new job in San Francisco, this causes

Overview of the Crank Trilogy The books that I chose to do my report on were the Crank trilogy, Crank, Glass, and Fallout, by Ellen Hopkins. Crank was published in 2004, Glass was published in 2007, and the last book, Fallout came out in 2013. Ellen Hopkins wrote these books when she had a personal experience when her daughter, Kristina, started using "the monster" after she met the wrong person. She wrote the books to help herself understand why her daughter did it, then she realized that other people would relate to it and how many people had the same story.…

In the film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, traditional genre boundaries are blurred together in many ways. “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” was a story I did not expect to be as fascinated by as I truly was. By combining an authoritarian yet familiar tone with a realistic setting, Joyce Oates short story angles itself into an unexpected horrifying tale, fit for ones with a distinctly strong heart. “Her name was Connie.” Don’t be fooled by this simple setup. This is not a story about a girl and her jealousy for her perfect sister.…

Australia seems to be blessed for producing beautiful films about real life situations fraught with meaning and mystery. The movies “Puberty Blues” and “The Year my voice broke” are of no exception. The landscape seems so realistic on the screen, and the sense of Australia's isolation does as well. The subject matter and thematic thrust of Puberty Blues is the girls’ inceptive desperation to hook into the “in-crowd”, but with a strong feminist kick.…

Disney Pixar has a funny way of captivating their audiences and eliciting emotional responses. So, it’s not surprising they are able to do this effectively with a movie about emotions. Inside Out is an excellent example of a universal film, because it has a wealth of information to share with any field, especially marketing and consumer behaviors. These are some of the observations I blogged in class while watching the film: • Once the perception of the broccoli is changed from gross to enticing (via the classic parent "airplane" trick) Riley's emotions are more willing to allow the food into her system.…

Pixar did originally attract animators away from Disney, but once Disney realized they couldn’t get them back, they decided to partner and make Toy Story. But, of course Steve found a way to make more money off of Pixar, and on the day it launched on the market it was worth over $1.2 billion. Jobs also made a deal with Michael Eisner, with Disney, to share all profits evenly. Within the first weekend, the movie got an opening of $30 million. It also became the top-grossing film of the year.…

The critical literature on disability in Disney films and the changes of representation throughout the years is a major aspect of this dissertation. This section will be brief as I will be employing the critical sources I name here in the subsequent chapters. The results of research done by Lawson & Fouts (2004, p. 312) show that 85% of animated Disney films include references to characters who have mental illnesses. This research has also shown that 21% of the major characters were referred to as being mentally ill, such as, Jafar from Aladdin, Maurice from Beauty and the Beast and Mrs Jumbo from Dumbo. Their findings have shown that children who watch films from The Walt Disney Company are exposed to a much greater frequency of mental illness than is typically shown on television and perhaps they are exposed to a greater frequency of mental illness than they will ever experience in their lives.…
