When Eilis heard the news that she would be leaving home, she felt a little uneasy about the idea that she would be thousands of miles away from home. It was hard for her to “Downstairs, once Rose and her mother were there, she talked about practical things and remained bright.” (31). This quote demonstrates that Eilis is hiding her feelings from her mother and sister, she is not sharing how she feels instead, she is pretending she is fine. She knows she feels uneasy but with the presence of her mother and Rose, she doesn’t want to cause distress to her family. Eilis’ dishonesty is causing herself anguish. For example, when the plans for Eilis to move to Brooklyn is finalized she started to feel a little more anxiety than she thought, “She promised herself that her not for one moment would she give them the smallest hint of how she felt, and she would keep it from herself if she had to until she was away from them. “(33). This quote demonstrates that she is at a point where she must hide it from her family, which causes her to make a promise to herself and make sure she doesn’t show her feeling. She knows that it is hard to do it but she was determined she will not show it to her family until she was far away from them.
