I am concerned by the theory presented by Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman (2013) explaining that being female, African American, and old is a detriment to the elderly. As explained by the authors, being mature in American society is basically means being put in a minority group. It is concerning to learn that the Elderly population is heavily scrutinized and discriminated against and the issues faced by the elderly can be exacerbated because of the person’s race. It is clear that beyond ageism there are far more complex issues. The disengagement theory presented by Cumming and Henry (1961) by way of Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman (2013) is a challenging concept to accept because being that the elderly are conditioned to believe that they should retire
