The article, “Discrimination in Gifted Education Must End” by Harold O. Levy, discusses the issues surrounding gifted programs in schools and most students who are placed in them. The article first introduces the perspective of the teachers, who are likely focused on the students with the most academic struggles. Teacher’s direct extra focus towards these students to encourage them to preserve, graduate, and create a better life for themselves. While teachers do this, they give a lack of attention to students who may be more intelligent and need more advanced placements. By doing this, the entire student population is not considered and some students are still not given the best educational experiences possible. It is not that teachers are purposely ignore these students, but because of their …show more content…
The first outcome is that gifted programs continue as is; this would allow for some highly intelligent students to gain a greater education and find ways to challenge themselves. However, it would leave many intelligent students without equal opportunities, simply based upon their backgrounds. The second outcome is that gifted programs are stopped all together. In this outcome, “gifted” students are no longer challenged and may continue work that is far to simplified for them, however, this would take away from the discrimination as all students would be learning the same and there would be no discrepancies made between students of different cultures. The third outcome is that gift programs open themselves to all students. With this, all students would be tested, no matter their race, and based on their scores they could then be placed in proper classes. This outcome allows for advanced students to be challenged but takes away any discrimination because all students can be tested for these programs. By doing this no student is left discouraged and everyone is given the same amount of attention and
