Discourse Community Paper
Communication is the basic element in any society. We communicate in different aspects of our lives through different forms of communication such as letters, spoken, visual, and more suitable for the different discourse communities we belong to. Each discourse community has its own rules; they have their language, topics of interest, and characteristics that make them unique. In this essay I will describe the four major discourse communities I belong to: my family, friends, the academic community, and my football group.
Family is the most important discourse community in my social and personal life. In order to join this community, you need to be born in it, adopted, or be considered a close family friend. We speak English as the main language, supplemented by well known body and facial language as well. The facial language used will tell you whether one of us wants the other to stop talking, is angry, or we did something right or wrong. English remains my major language. Language ranges from formal to semi-formal. In essays, homework, expositions and social interaction with teachers, I use formal, but with classmates, semi-formal language is more appropriate. The rules in this community ensure a harmonious and peaceful co-existence. Students need to attend classes, pass grades, and turn in assignments. The media used in this community is very diverse; ( blackboard, essay papers, e-mails, letters, notebooks, books).There is power in numbers and students' voice is never overlooked. This community has a variety of topics; it all depends on the classes and people’s interests. Although there is one topic all of my classes and relations talk about, success in your professional and personal
