The New Era of Discipline for Children We are in an era of research. Millions of studies are being conducted about anything we can imagine. The Internet has made most of this information available to us right at our fingertips. More logical decisions can be made about how we eat, exercise and even how we raise our children. Statistics, opinions from well-educated individuals and scenarios demonstrating effects from actions can influence our parenting styles. According to an article written at the Child Study Center, Yale University School of Medicine, 74% of American parents spank their children (Kazdin and Benjet 100). Spanking has been a social norm for years accepted by parents. After thorough research, it is time to question …show more content…
Studies have shown children who are spanked around age three show more behavior problems than children not spanked at that age (Maguire-Jack, Berger, and Gromoske 1966). In the case of high-frequency spanking discussed in an Abstract from Columbia University, these children have been seen consistently showing negative externalizing behavior (McKenzie, Nicklas, Brooks-Gunn, and Waldfogel 1896). Externalizing behavior is very impulsive, fighting, aggressive and out of control. While parents who spank are trying to prevent aggressive behavior, they are actually causing it. These facts show, with the help of research, we can begin to think logically about disciplining our …show more content…
Parents generally do not want to resort to physical punishment, but they do not know there are alternatives out there. Every child is different and the way to care for and teach a child is different, however, spanking should never be a resort and does not have to be. The Internet has provided a mass amount of parenting options out there for just about any scenario a parent would go through with their children. Spanking has been an effective way for parents to reprimand their children if they misbehave or act inappropriately. Until recently, spanking has been a culturally acceptable form of punishment for children between the ages of one to five. In fact, 65% of 3-year-old children had been spanked within the last month (Lee, Altschul, and Gershoff 2017). However, many disagree with the idea of spanking their children, due to the fact that it may cause more aggressive behavior. Instead of spanking, people have turned to a warmth parenting style which includes “affection, comfort, concern, nurturance, support, and good old fashioned love (Lee, Altschul, and Gershoff 2018) .”…

Half of all U.S. parents say they’ve spanked their kid. Spanking doesn’t just happen in the privacy of homes, either. Nineteen states allow teachers or principals to hit children. Opponents often point to scientific studies as proof that spanking is bad. And I confess,…

Spanking has long been implemented as a form of discipline to correct misbehavior in children. As the proverb goes, “Whoever spares the rod hates their children, but the one who loves their children is careful to discipline them”. While spanking, or more professionally referred to as corporal punishment, has stood as a tried and trusted means of discipline, controversy regarding its integrity, value, and effects has been brought to serious question; and really, this shouldn’t be terribly shocking. The most basic and fundamental aspect of spanking itself is to strike an individual, and this can seem entirely skewed. However, when done in an appropriate manner, corporal punishment ultimately benefits those who receive its brunt in ways that other punishment methods fail to do as effectively.…

Two of the Relief Nursery programs that I belie are preventative are the Healthy Families and the Therapeutic Early Childhood Program. Both of these programs offer close and personal support to both the parents and the children. It is very important that both the adults and kids are involved because both require very different needs when it comes to support. The Healthy Families program is designed for first-birth parents. The program starts after the birth of the baby and continues up until the age of three.…

In contrast to what the world says, with the preceding understanding of course, there is a time to spank our children. The Bible is clear on this point. "He who spares his rod hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines him promptly" (Prov. 13:24). It's a loving thing to spank our children in appropriate circumstances. If we don't, they're in danger of continuing down a path that becomes more dangerous over time and leads to destruction.…

The Spanking Controversy Four out of five Americans believe it is “sometimes appropriate” to spank a child (Horton). Does painful punishment build a better person? Over the years, there has been a lot of back and forth controversy over whether or not it is an acceptable form of punishment for parents to spank their children. This subject is interesting because I have a 3 year old son who is wild and crazy, and sometimes does not do as he is told.…

I agree, in my opinion spanking your child can be an effective way to administer punishment especially if the child is caught in the act of doing something wrong; but I think that if you were to spank the child a while after he or she has already done something wrong it would not be as effective as being caught in the act. As a child, I can remember when my parents would give me a spanking for something I did wrong and most of the time if they caught me in the act and punished me right then and there it stuck better in my head. For example, when I was around 9 years old my dad taught me how to hunt for doves every season we would hunt doves and shoot them.…

There is a huge debate in today’s society about whether or not spanking is an acceptable form of punishment and discipline. I believe that spanking is a great way to discipline children, and I believe that there are many positive results of disciplining children by spanking them. Discipline should be very important to a parent. When trying to raise children, parents must teach their children the difference between wrong from right. When children do something right, they should be rewarded.…

Parents have to be cautious when disciplining their children to avoid trouble. Unfortunately, there is not a set behavior that warrants a spanking. Some sources say that it is okay to spank because it aids in building a strong relationship of respect with the parent and child, and it results in well-mannered children and adults. Parents also say that it is normal to spank children and that it is just disciplinary actions (“The Spanking Debate” 1).…

In disciplining children, parents should do everything as kindly and gently as they can first. They should try to understand a child, make sure the child understands what is expected of them, use reasoning and find an adequate nonphysical consequence, like a "timeout" or taking away privileges. But if the child won't cooperate, some kids — at least some of the time — need something more forceful to back it up. b) Establishes Respect Many kids who grew up getting spank by their parents are more respectful to adults c) Disciplinary Tool When used correctly, spanking is safe and effective, and can be an appropriate tool for parents.…

Studies have showed that time-out and room isolation is just as effective as a spanking on the behind or a physical hold on a child (Larzelere). It also shows that those who were spanked have a probability of abusing and hitting others just because they think that it is okay and that they are bigger and not know any better. It was done to them so they think that they can do it to others (Jenny). Just because one spank a child once does not means that it always works. “Suppose a child is spanked and then repeats a behavior, research shows that this happens just as often as when a parent simply says no and the child does the action again” (Straus).…

Many children are being neglected and abused by irresponsible adults. “Hundreds of thousands of children in the United States are estimated to be victims of sexual, physical, or emotional abuse”(Gale). In each family children are raised differently, however, most of the time people raise their children based on the way they were raised. Moreover, many children were raised to fear their parents because their punishment is to be abused in some way. The problem with defending spanking is that many fail to define it and/or defending it.…

Children need to be raised and educated in the best positive surroundings because they are the hope of the future. Therefore, parenting is one of the most inspiring and praiseworthy responsibilities that one can experience. Parents have a significance role in development of child’s character, emotions, and behavioral manner. When I was growing up, my parents believed spanking was the best possible solution for a child who would disobey.
