The dire wolf, or Canis dirus, is a wolf that lived during the Pleistocene Epoch (2.6 million to 11,700 years ago) and became extinct between 10,000 to 16,000 years ago during the ice age. It was native to North America and thousands of Dire Wolf skeletons were found and stored in La Brea tar pits in southern California, where it is believed to be the most common mammal in the area. Remains of the Dire wolf have also been found across a broad range of habitats in North America, which include the plains, grasslands, and some mountain areas in North America, and the savannah of South America. Also due to fossils discovered there is a severe lack of dire wolf pups and is taken as a sign that the older wolves and parents kept the young wolves away from pack hunting and just provided food for them until they become old enough to hunt and provide for themselves in their packs (BBC). While the pack hunts, the pups stayed at the main camp area or behind the hunting animals and awaiting for the pack hunters to return with food and feed them. Only when the pups are older they are aloud to begin travelling and hunting with the other pack members and kill for their food
