The poet portrays the differences between the characters by using personification. The poem states “For my dagger is bathed in the blood if the brave, I come, care-worn tenant of life, from the grave“ (Stanza 1, lines 1-2). To explain, death is not a person, but the poet gives his features that a human would have. Doing this makes the reader acknowledge him a person due to the effect the writing technique. In addition, the poet used personification when mentioning “my dagger is bathed”. This further goes into the concept of death having human like things, but yet he is not living, whereas the mortal us living. Another instance of the writer using poetic elements is when he uses diction. To cite, “ O Death! O my friend! This is shown in the poem, “And in slumber with me blunt the arrows of fate. I offer to thee—Say, victim of grief, wilt thou slumber with me “ (Stanza 3, Lines 8-10). The author once again uses diction here by using the word “slumber”. Slumber normally is sleeping for a long time. The way the poet uses the word slumber is different. It makes death want the mortal to slumber with him meaning killing himself and joining death. This would make this similar as they both are not living, removing the thing that made these two character
