“We are in danger of destroying ourselves by our greed and stupidity. We cannot remain looking inwards at ourselves on a small and increasingly polluted and overcrowded planet.” (Hawkings) Greed can cause a man to become self-centered and be one who cares only about his money. He may care less concerning the welfare of the poor. But what most don’t know or think about is how different and similar A Christmas Carol, the movie is to the written play.There are lots of similarities, but there are a few notable differences between the two including the Past, Present, and Future of his Christmases. In the play A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, Ebenezer Scrooge is haunted by three spirits that show him Past Christmases, present Christmases, and future Christmases. In Past, Scrooge is shown his old boss Fezziwig and how he stopped their work to hold a dance on Christmas. He is shown his younger sister Fan and how she wants him to move back home. In present, Scrooge sees his employee Cratchit’s family and their meager meal, but he sees how happy they are together. He is shown what his niece and nephew think of him, how he is greedy. He instead only speaks to tell Scrooge he will be haunted by the three spirits and then leaves for the rest of the movie instead of appearing to the audience and explaining. In the play, Past appears an old man (Dickens, 11), but in the movie, Past is a woman in a white dress. While Past is visiting him, he shows Scrooge what he missed out on, like Belle (Movie 1984). In the movie, only Mrs. Dilbur and Old Joe seen trading Scrooge’s property (Movie 1984) unlike the play where two other people, another woman and a man (Dickens, 28), are seen also trading his belongings.
