Achoo, Tyson and Bird Flu?
Terry Lee Hines Jr. Creative Writing 8/3/2017

Most people don’t ever think about how similar animals are to the humans. Sickness for example is just one thing that humans and animals have in common. A most occurring sickness has risen in the bird kingdom that can be passed on to humans. The “Bird Flu” or Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) is a disease that can easily be spread and has resulted in the death of billions of chickens and hundreds of humans.(Winterbottom, 2017) It has several different strands do to its power to easily mutate and it has at least 3 known mutations than could be harmful to humans. The bird flu emerged in China in 1996 and caused a large outbreak in Hong

was found to have a strain of the bird flu. This is said to be the first case of the H7 strain in commercial poultry this year, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.(Winterbottom, 2017) Tyson, the biggest chicken meat producer in the United States, said that they are working on containing the virus by euthanizing bird on the contract farm.(Strom, 2017) This is the best and only solution to this epidemic do to its constant mutation and quick transference. The avian influenza virus quickly is able to mutate and change if left alone, one known strain that can be problematic for humans include H7N9 which was found to kill humans and birds if transferred. The outbreak in Tennessee had the strain H5N2 which left no people affected but if it hadn’t been caught the strain could’ve mutated into H7N9 or another possible deadly strain. There is no vaccine for the bird flu; it is similar to the common cold so if affect, victims could not know and be left untreated for days. Though Tyson, the USDA, and the state did not name the facility involved they did say that any and all flocks around the area of the farm will be tested and will not be transported regardless of affiliation until either tested negative for the virus or properly quarantined and taken care of.(Strom, 2017) As mentioned earlier, Tyson euthanized the contract farm, the main reason for the euthanization is because of the fact of there being no known cure for the Bird Flu. There is nothing that Tyson nor the farm could have given to its birds to destroy or recover from the disease. Adding on to that, it also isn’t as easy as killing one bird, this is because the disease can easily be transferred through close contact of the host or droplets left behind. This might also explain why Tyson induced precautions like disinfecting all vehicles entering farms and banning all nonessential visitor access to

Those farmers who complained about the chicks and the services that Tyson Foods provide were given chick from older hens(The Meat Racket, Pg 49). Chicks from older hens were weak and have a higher mortality rate, which lowers the profits of the farmer that receives them. And those farmers who received chicks from young hens were consistently the highest paid farmers. Tyson foods shipping logs suggest that the corporation used chicks from older hens to punish farmers that complained by Tyson’s Policies. To Tyson, the tournament system was a method to eliminate bad farmer that reduced their profits.…

In 2008, a video was released by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) that showed severe animal cruelty at Mowmar Farms Hog Confinement, located just outside of Fairmont, Minnesota (Genoways). The video showed employees prodding hogs too crippled to stand with electric prods and beating hogs repeatedly on their backs with metal gate rods (Genoways). Adding to this, the video also revealed the method the workers used to euthanize underweight piglets: a technique called thumping (Genoways). Thumping involves workers taking the piglets by their hind legs and smashing their skulls against the concrete floor. Their bodies would then be put in large bins, where they would be left to die (Genoways).…

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has confirmed cases of highly pathogenic avian flu in 21 states since December. Fifteen states had outbreaks in poultry and six in wild birds only. These disease spreads through the animal’s saliva, feces and nasal secretions. This economic hazard can be devastating for farms, but the disease is low risk to human health. The outbreak in the Midwest has heightened prices for eggs and roasting turkeys, but is pushing chicken prices down because other countries are restricting any poultry imports from the United States.…

The transmission of the Influenza virus is unique in that it is not just a virus that humans get and it is hard to contain because both animals and humans spread the virus into the populations. The Influenza virus is spread from wild animals to humans and then is spread from human to human among the populations. Many of the common animals that spread the virus are birds, and ducks.…

Orthomyxoviruses consist of 8 segmented pieces of negative-sense RNA, encoding 11 proteins (VanMeter et al., 2010). Influenza A can be found in humans as well as animals such as pigs, ducks, whales and chickens (National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, 2015). This type can also be broken down into several subtypes such as: Spanish flu (H1N1), Asian flu (H2N2), Hong Kong flu (H3N2), Avian flu (H5N1), Zoonotic flu (H7N7), and several more endemic types (H1N2, H9N2, H7N3, H10N7) (VanMeter et al., 2010). The subtypes are developed “based on two proteins on the surface of the virus: the hemagglutinin (H) and the neuraminidase (N)” ("Types," 2015, para. 2).…

“Since 1700, there have been approximately a dozen influenza A virus pandemics; in the past 120 years there were pandemics in 1889, 1918, 1957 and 1968” (6). The pandemic in 1918 was the worst in in recorded history which caused approximately 546,000 deaths (6). These are all reasons why the flu is worth studying and finding a vaccine for. There are multiple types of the flu virus, specifically influenza A, B, C, and D. These names are given based on the antigen they have, or antigenic type (2). “Human influenza A and B viruses cause seasonal epidemics of disease almost every winter in the United States” (2).…

Topic: Adopting and Rescuing Animals Specific Purpose: To persuade my effective speaking class the benefits of adopting a pet over buying one from a breeder or pet store. Central Idea: Adopting animals and rescuing is much more beneficial than buying an animal from a pet store because you won’t be unknowingly or knowingly supporting a puppy mill, you will be saving an animal’s life, and you will feel better overall in the end about rescuing your new pet rather than buying. INTRODUCTION Attention-Getter: According to Humane Society of the United States organization’s website I accessed on December 6, 2016, “Each year, 2.7 million adoptable dogs and cats are euthanized in the United States, simply because too many pets come into shelters and…
