There are two very important processes we need in order to stay alive. They are photosynthesis and human digestion. Even though, both of these processes are vital to our existence, there has been so many changes to them over the past few hundred years caused by human activity and scientific advancement. Right now, you may (or may not) be trying to recall what exactly photosynthesis and human digestion are. But anyway, let’s just pretend that you are back in elementary school and you are learning about this for the first time.
So, let’s begin with photosynthesis. First of all, when you split photosynthesis up into two words, they are photo (which means light) and synthesis (a combination; to put together). So basically, plants need food, but instead of waiting on people and animals to provide, they make their own. They do this by using carbon dioxide, water, and sunlight. The carbon dioxide passes through stomata, which are teeny, tiny holes in the leaf. The water is sucked up from the ground, by roots. From the roots, the water then passes through vessels in the stem, while it is on its way to the leaves. Sunlight is absorbed into the leaves by a green chemical called chlorophyll.

Inside those cells are structures called chloroplast, which contains chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is what gives a plant its color. As I was telling you before, the chlorophyll absorbs the sun’s energy, which is used to split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen. The oxygen is then released from the plant’s leaves into the atmosphere. The hydrogen and carbon dioxide are then used to form glucose or food for the plant. Some of the glucose is used as energy for the growth and development of plants, while the rest is stored either in the leaves, roots, or fruits for
