Indentured servants paid and worked for companies to transport them to America and get land. Most of the time minimum would be 5 years and if the working family member died another family would most likely take over for the dead family member. Some of the owners cheated indentured servants into more years of labor to pay for the accessories other than travel like clothing, food, etc. When an indentured servant was finished with their term the owners left them on their own. The job was to help colonize the land then you were left to help yourself.
