As a diesel mechanic you can work as long as you feel you need to, you work until you want to retire. You need to be healthy and in tip top shape. There is a lot of heavy lifting that comes along with being a mechanic. You need to have a good personality and be respectful because you may deal with customers face to face or over the phone.
