The black and white illustrations are simple. In this story, the text drives most of the story telling. Ed, an elephant, lives at the zoo in a cage. Two men, visiting the zoo, bring nuts for Ed and choose to place one in the mud outside of the cage and another on top of one of a metal posts outside of Ed’s reach. He attempted to stand on his hind legs to reach the nut. He determined that he could blow water on it with his trunk and bring the nut to the ground. The men returned to give Ed the bag of nuts. Ed was thrilled with the bag and having the nut and fell asleep. In this story, the men have the most power. Ed was stuck in a cage and he is dependent on them for most everything. He was able to achieve some power by removing the nut from the top post, but the humans began and ended the story with all of the
