Dear Diary, The smell of rotting flesh is passing through the air. Everything is so unsanitary and crowded, but I have got to do what I need to do to save people's lives. Syphilis and dysentery illnesses are everywhere and I am sure that every one of the nurses, including me, are terrified of getting ill. We are trying to treat the syphilis with mercury, but what if we run out? Nothing is hygienic, but what can I do at this point? We have to amputate arms, legs, and feet daily. There is nothing but hope. Let us just say that luck is rare around here. Some days we are overwhelmed with the amount of wounded and suffering people, and some days there are less.
