After reading this novel, I had a strong understanding of the cultural and contextual considerations of this book. In the oral discussion our class talked about how time could matter. I agreed with a fellow student when she said “The time matters because the place smells but it did not impact him” and “The systems in place back then made it easier to kill and not get caught.” What they said justified what I already thought.…

Lucrezia Borgia, a woman of royalty or a victim of deception. A famous notoriety goes before as she earned a reputation as a an alleged poisoner. In actuality, historians believe that she has been an innocent woman, wrongfully reprimanded for her family, who killed nobles with the poison la cantarella. The entire play is beautiful and comes together perfectly thanks to the Jessica. Jessica is the primary reason that Shylock was so mad at Antonio. She left him to elope with Lorenzo, stole a large sum of his goods and converted to Christianity, all with the help of Antonio’s friends. The main conflict of the play between Shylock and Antonio is completely intertwined with the eloping of Jessica. She caused Shylock to be blinded by anger and seek out on ruthless quest for Antonio’s flesh.…

Similarly, at the beginning of the play, he declares that he is unconcerned about his merchandise, a sentiment he echoes in his final lines. His relationship to Bassanio, too, does not change, despite the attempt on his life; in the first act, Antonio's "purse...and person" are "unlock'd" to Bassanio (1.1.138). At the end of the play, he offers those same items again, with the addition of his soul (5.1.249-53). Antonio clearly has not learned, nor has he changed, from the dire events set forth in the play. Shylock, too, exhibits no significant change throughout the course of the play.…

There are three main components of Radford’s portrayal of The Merchant of Venice that create an all around superior film than Nunn’s portrayal of the Shakespeare play, the time period, the cast, and the way the film is shot. Michael Radford kept the time period that the film takes place in the same as the original text, while Trevor Nunn did not and changed the time period in his movie to in between World War I and II. The cast in this adaptation of The Merchant of Venice are great actors and at the helm is Academy Award winner Al Pacino. The way this film is shot feels like a major motion picture, and the way the lighting, the extras, and the sets are organized makes it seem so real unlike Nunn’s version where it feels like someone filming a stage production. Because of the time period, the cast, and the way this film was shot is overall why Michael Radford’s version of Shakespeare’s…

If a supposed villain were to lose all he worked hard for, be abandoned by loved ones, and be forced to give up his identity after being oppressed by other civilians with strong religious beliefs, would this individual remain as villainous as intended to be? In The Merchant of Venice, a play written by William Shakespeare, a dramatic plot was set in an era where the judgement and persecution of Jewish people was acceptable. Respectively, Shakespeare chose to characterize the villain of the play to be a Jewish moneylender named Shylock. Although Shylock’s service was commonly detested by Venetian citizens, two Christian Renaissance men named Antonio and Bassanio proceeded to request a loan from Shylock. In making this deal, the plot began to reveal a multitude of dimensions to Shylock’s character.…

I first not this monologue when we were reading the play ‘Merchant of Venice’ but I only got gripped by this monologue when we watched the movie it really put the immensity of the monologue into perspective. I first noticed the actual gravity of the monologue forces you to give your full attention nothing less. I felt the actual power of the piece comes from how Shylock asks questions and then gives his answers to those questions with reasons of why he hates Antonio and what he has done to shylock. He actually answers one of the biggest questions in this play why would someone ever want a pound of human flesh it is just sickening thinking of it.…

Most Shakespearean comedies end with marriages and the triumph of a protagonist, as opposed to death and misfortune like a tragedy. By this definition, The Merchant of Venice is a comedy; yet, many skeptics question this claim due to their analysis of the trial. They consider Shylock’s loss in the trial to be the downfall of a poor protagonist, suggesting that Merchant is a tragedy. However, these skeptics blame it on the Christian defendants in court. Shakespeare portrays Shylock as a self-destructive character, affirming that The Merchant of Venice is a comedic play, and reinforces its anti-Semitic message by suggesting that Jews create their own problems.…

As said by Hillary Clinton, “Human rights are women’s rights, and women’s rights are human rights.” Likewise, women’s rights in Saudi Arabia should be fought for just like human rights. However, in Saudi Arabia, strict laws and regulations cause women to be inferior to men. For instance, women in Saudi Arabia are not allowed to obtain a passport or travel out of the country without male consent. This highly sexist way of life is justified by the government by proclaiming how these laws are accepted by the Quran.…

Shylock could have demanded any amount of money and left happier than he was when the play began. Instead, Shylock went for the kill and this leads to Portia finding a loophole in the contract. Antonio and the Duke then made it so that Shylock loses half of his fortune, any money he makes goes to Lorenzo and his daughter once he dies, and he must convert to Christianity. At this moment Shylock has now lost his family, his money, and now most importantly his religion because of the decisions…
