Abstract
Diabetes Mellitus is a growing global problem with huge social, economic, and health discrepancies. It is a chronic metabolic disorder. 6.4% of the adult population is suffering from this disorder. This is estimated to increase to 430 million in the absence of better control or cure. (Eckhard. M, et al (2009) Infections in Diabetes; 935-941) The two main reasons for the increase include the aging population and obesity rates will increase. There are many different medication, treatments, and therapies involved in the maintenance of diabetes mellitus. Type 1 DM can be caused by family history, disease of the pancreas, or infection and illness. Type 2 DM can be caused by obesity, impaired glucose tolerance, insulin resistance, low HDL levels, sedentary life style, ethnic background, and polycystic ovary syndrome. (Anastasias. G. Pittas, MD (2011) Diabetes Mellitus) Age may also play a factor for those that are 45 years or older and overweight. Gestational diabetes can be caused by obesity, glucose intolerance, family history, and age. Prediabetes is a milder form of the condition. Not many know that one third of all people with diabetes do not know they have the disease. Also that type 2 diabetes usually doesn’t start with any signs and symptoms. If you are at risk for type 2 diabetes, it can be prevented with moderate weight loss of about 10-15lbs and 30 minutes of moderate physical activity each day. Also only about 5% of people with diabetes have type 1. A diet plan for diabetes is not much different from the recommended for people without diabetes. Diabetes happens to be the leading cause of blindness in the working adult. People who are overweight have a better chance of inhibiting diabetes if they get bariatric surgery.
