Devil Facial Tumor Disease Essay

Improved Essays
The Tasmanian devil is an apex predator and the largest marsupial carnivore. Devil Facial Tumor Disease (DFTD) is a highly aggressive, transmissible cancer that is decimating the Tasmanian devil population and threatening the species with extinction in as little as thirty years (Brüniche-Olsen et al., 2016). The disease first showed up in 1996 and a second transmissible cancer in devils was discovered in 2014. This disease has since declined the population 95% in some areas while spreading to more than 80% of their range (Hollings, et al., 2014). Research towards a vaccine will help to facilitate the reintroduction of these animals into the wild and would provide a new era in wildlife management and research.
CANCER ORIGINS
There are two known naturally occurring cancers that are transmissible: Devil Facial Tumor Disease (DFTD) and Canine Transmissible Venereal Tumor (CTVT). Each of these first arose with a single individual as a result of low levels of genetic diversity (Grueber et al., 2011). Instead of having a normal life span, these clonal cells can live well past the life span of its host and cause DFTD in other devils. The transmission of the cancer in devils is thought to happen from direct inoculation of tumor cells when

DFTD is primarily seen inside the oral cavity with tumors developing primarily around the face and jaw, but can then metastasize (Grueber et al., 2011). In extreme cases, the tumors may also be seen extending to the neck and other parts of the body. These tumors can grow large and fester making eating a challenge which ultimately kills the animal (Jones & McCallum, 2011). All individuals who contract the disease die within six months as a result of starvation because of an inability to feed or as a result of organ failure from metastases (Grueber et al.,

Carcinogens bring about mutation in the genes that induce development of cancer. About 30 percent of lung adenocarcinomas are brought about by a mutation in the K-ras proto-oncogene. It has also been reported that epigenetic alterations that happen on genes may lead to inactivation of tumor suppressor genes. This, therefore, implies that proliferation of cells will be uncontrollable leading to lung cancer. The epidermal growth factor receptor (which functions to regulate apoptosis, cell proliferation and tumor invasion) undergoes mutation.…

The cancer is highly contagious and nearly all fully-grown wild Tasmanian Devils are infected. The cancer is able to spread when Devils come into contact, devils are aggressive animals and frequently bite each other when squabbling over food, establishing dominance or meeting to mate. The cancer is not viral, the living cancer cells simply transfer from one devil to another when contact is made. Every Tasmanian Devil is susceptible to DFTD as there is very little genetic diversity in the population. When cancer cells are transferred, the tumour cells are not recognised as “foreign” by the newly infected host and no immune response is mounted.…

Fibropapillomatosis (FP) is found in marine turtles and is a disease that causes the growth of mostly benign tumors (Foley et al., 2005). It was first reported in the Florida Keys in 1938 (Work & Balazs, 1999). The tumors can be cutaneous and can also be visceral (Duarte, 2012). According to Duarte et al. (2012), visceral tumors are mainly identified as occurring in the oral cavity, liver, kidneys, gastrointestinal tract, heart, spleen, and lungs; while, cutaneous tumors are identified on the turtle’s flippers (both front and rear), eyes, scutes and neck.…

The growing pressures of extinction for over 3,000 Australian native species are currently threatening the Australian ecosystem’s ecological balance. A major contributor to these pressures is the introduction of mesopredators such as foxes and feral cats. These species have been able to strive in the Victorian region as Australia’s native apex predators such as the dingo, have been removed or culled from the area (Milman, 2015). Therefore, with no threat of predation, no fatal disease threats and an extreme reproductive rate, these species have been able to over populate regions all over Australia. Feral animals pose a great threat to native species by predation, competition for food and shelter, destroying habitat, and by spreading diseases.…

Mesothelioma is a true and aggressive heath issue that is present across the United States, including my geographical area of Ohio, the Mahoning County. This disease is most commonly caused from asbestos exposure. Asbestos is a natural occurring mineral silicate that was commonly used for insulating and fireproofing. Asbestos easily breaks down into very small dust-like fibers, which can be easily inhaled into person’s lungs. Once asbestos is inhaled it can yield many health hazards, including mesothelioma (Roberts, Patsios, Paul, Deperrot, Teel, Bayanati, & Johnston, 2013).…

Squamous cell carcinoma is characterized as uncontrolled growths located in the very thin, flattened cells in the epidermis. SCC can range from open sores to warts in terms of identification. It is mainly caused by "cumulative UV exposure over the course of a lifetime" (Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC), 2012), tanning beds with their intense UV lights can also lead to squamous cell carcinoma. Prevention of squamous cell carcinoma is common with other type of skin cancer; cover up when outside, avoid tanning, especially UV tanning beds, use a broad spectrum sunscreens, and get familiar with your body by examining it once a month. Treatment for this skin cancer is "based off the tumors type, size, location, and depth of penetration, as well as the patients age and general health"…
