As the CBS Program Director for the Detroit television market I would not cancel showing the TV show because it does not reflect what is actually happening in real life. I believe this because even though there are racial problems in cities on regular basis they are irrelevant to the current city because these racial movements and crisis start elsewhere. Such as the violence in Detroit did not start until something happen in Los Angeles and there shouldn’t be controversy in Detroit about Los Angeles racial issues. My three main reasons of not censoring their content includes freedom of speech and expression rights, stations have to still make revenue and canceling the show does not allow a free marketplace of ideas. As a business the news stations has a priority and right to showcase their programming content and utilize their free speech rights and expression rights. Since WWJ is the CBS affiliate is financially struggling because the station is not bring in that much revenue for the next few weeks due to covering primary election coverage. The station department heads and general manager are worried about not bringing in enough money during their primary election coverage because smaller audience fragments will watch their content. Detroit needs to showcase the show in the two hour block because they bought it and it resold $18,000 above normal rates to share the television series. Part of programming requires taking a risk the citizens of Detroit shouldn’t fear a TV show influencing local behavior. This paranoia does not reflect the realities of life and it is the public’s interest to show it to get people to start talking about the issues rather than starting violence.
